Puritan Bedspread Pattern

There are slight variations to materials and instructions between these two versions of the same pattern in different publications. Two versions are below.



American Thread #11, Bedspreads and Tablecloths

MATERIALS REQUIRED

32 Balls of American Thread Company "Puritan" Mercerized Cotton, White, Ecru or Cream or "Trojan" Crochet Cotton, White, Ecru, Cream or Beige.
Steel Crochet Hook #6 or 7.

Each Motif measures about 5 inches and 216 Motifs, (12 x 18) are required to make spread measuring about 62 x 92 inches without the 7 inch fringe.

Ch 6, join to form a ring.

2nd Row. Ch 7, d c in ring, * ch 3, d c in same ring, repeat from * 5 times, ch 3, join in 4th st of ch.

3rd Row. Ch 1, 2 s c in 1st mesh, ** ch 14, d c in 6th st from hook, * ch 2, skip 2 sts of ch, d c in next st, repeat from * ch 1, turn.

4th Row. 1 s c in d c, 2 s c in mesh, 1 s c in next d c, 2 s c in next mesh, 1 s c in next d c, 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts of ch, 3 s c in next st of ch, 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts of ch, 1 s c in d c, 2 s c in mesh, 1 s c in d c, 2 s c in mesh, 1 s c in last d c, ch 1, turn.

5th Row. 1 s c in each of the next 10 s c, picking up the back loop of st only, 3 s c in next st, 1 s c in each of the next 10 s c, ch 1, turn.

6th Row. 1 s c in each of the next 11 s c picking up the back loop of st only, 3 s c in next st, 1 s c in each of the next 11 s c, ** ch 1, turn.

7th Row. 1 s c in each of the next 12 s c picking up the back loop of st only, 3 s c in next st, 1 s c in each of the next 12 s c. With right side of work toward you sl loop off hook, fold the petal through the center lengthwise and sl st across lower edge and the 2 remaining chs of stem, flatten out petal again, work 2 s c over remainder of 1st mesh, ch 5, sl st in 1st for picot, 2 s c in next mesh and repeat between **, ch 1, turn.

8th Row. 1 s c in each of the 1st 3 s c, slip loop off hook, insert hook in back loop of corresponding st of previous petal made and pull through loop to join, 1 s c in each of the next 3 s c, join to corresponding st of previous petal, 1 s c in each of the next 6 s c, 3 s c in next st, 1 s c in each of the next 12 s c, complete petal same as previous petal and continue until there are 8 petals joining the last petal to 1st petal made, break thread.

9th Row. Join thread in point of petal, ch 7, d c in same space, * ch 2, skip 1 st, d c in next st, ch 2, skip 1 st, d c in next st, ch 2, skip 1 st, tr c in next st, skip 1st free st on next petal, tr c in next st, ch 2, skip 1 st, d c in next st, ch 2, skip 1 st, d c in next st, ch 2, skip 1 st, d c in point of petal, ch 3, d c in same space, repeat from * all around, ch 2, join in 4th st of ch.

10th Row. Ch 1, * 3 s c in 1st mesh, 1 s c in d c, 2 s c in next mesh, s c in d c, 2 s c in next mesh, s c in d c, 2 s c in next mesh, skip the 2 tr c, 2 s c in each of the next 3 meshes, 1 s c in each of the 3 d c and repeat from * all around.

11th Row. Ch 5, skip 3 s c, 1 s c in each of the next 7 s c, ch 3, skip 4 s 1 s c in each of the next 17 s c, ch 3, skip 4 s c, 1 s c in each of the next 7 s c, repeat from beginning all around.

12th Row. Sl st into loop. Ch 6, tr c into loop, * ch 1, tr c into same loop, repeat from * 4 times, ** ch 3, skip 1 s c, 1 s c in each of the next 5 s c, ch 4, skip 1 s c of next group of s c, 1 s c in each of the next 15 s c, ch 4, skip 1 s c of next group of s c, 1 s c in each of the next 5 s c, ch 3, 1 tr c in loop, * ch 1, tr c in same loop, repeat from * 5 times and repeat from ** all around, ch 3, join in 5th st of ch.

13th Row. S c into next loop, * ch 3, s c into next loop, repeat from * 5 times, ** ch 3, skip 1 s c, s c in each of the next 3 s c, ch 3, d c into next loop, ch 3, skip 1 s c, 1 s c in each of the next 13 s c, ch 3, d c over loop, ch 3, skip 1 s c, 1 s c in each of the next 3 s c, * ch 3, s c into next loop, repeat from * 7 times and repeat from ** all around completing the loops at corner.

14th Row. Sl st to next loop, ch 2, s c into next loop, ch 2, s c into next loop, ch 3, s c into same loop (this is the corner) * ch 2, s c into next loop, repeat from * 3 times, * ch 2, d c into next loop, repeat from * ch 2, skip 2 s c, 1 s c in each of the next 9 s c, * ch 2, d c in next loop, repeat from *. * Ch 2, s c into next loop, repeat from * 4 times, ch 3, s c into same loop, * ch 2, s c into next loop, repeat from * 3 times and continue all around.

15th Row. Ch 1, 2 s c in each of the next 2 loops, 5 s c in corner loop, 2 s c in each of the next 4 loops, 3 s c in each of the next 3 loops, skip 1 s c, 1 s c in each of the next 7 s c, and continue all around.

16th Row. Working into back loop of st only work 1 s c in each s c to corner st, 3 s c in corner. Around entire spread work 1 ch meshes, working a d c into every other st. Across top edge, join thread in d c, * ch 3, 2 d c in same space, skip one mesh, sl st in next mesh, ch 3, 2 d c in same space, skip 1 d c and mesh, sl st in next d c, repeat from * across top edge.

FRINGE. Cut 14 lengths 14 inches long, double these and knot into mesh. Repeat in every other mesh and knot again as illustrated.

The spread may also be made in any of the following threads, "De Luxe" Mercerized Crochet and Knitting-Cotton, Balls or Cones, "Star" Crochet Cord, "Star" Pearl Cotton size 5, "Gem" Mercerized Crochet Cotton size 5 or "Star" Crochet Cotton size 3 or 5.

Work 215 more motifs in same manner. Sew motifs together.

EDGE: Attach thread in corner and working across top, ch 4, d c in same space, * ch 1, skip 1 st, d c in next st, repeat from * all around working 1 d c, ch 1, 1 d c in center st at each corner, join. 2nd ROW: * Ch 3, 2 d c in same space, skip 1 mesh, sl st in next mesh, ch 3, 2 d c in same space, skip 1 d c and 1 mesh, sl st in next d c, repeat from * across top edge only, join, cut thread.

FRINGE: Wind thread over a 7 inch cardboard. Cut one end. Using 14 strands, double in half and loop through every other mesh on the 3 sides. * Take half of one group of fringe and half of next group of fringe, knot tog about ½ inch from 1st row of knots, repeat from * all around. Trim fringe evenly.
