SIZE—Infant.

MATERIALS—SPINNERIN HEAVEN SPUN 12 balls; 1 steel Crochet Hook No. 3; 1 bone Crochet Hook No. F; 2 yds. ¾ in. ribbon for Cap and Sacque; 3½ yds. ½ in. ribbon for Bootees and Afghan.

GAUGESacque, Cap and Bootees—2 Patterns = 2¼ inches. 4 rows = l inch. Afghan—1 Pattern = 1½ inches. 6 rows = 2 inches. Accurate gauge is essential.

PATTERNRow 1—Ch 3, *work 5 D. C. in next S. C., drop loop from hook, insert hook through top of first D. C. and draw loop through this stitch. (This is a popcorn.) Skip 4 S. C., work 9 T. C. in next st., skip 4 S. C. and repeat from * across row, ending with a popcorn in last S. C. Row 2—Ch 2, *work 1 S. C. in joining st. of popcorn in row below, work 1 S. C. in each T. C. in shell, and repeat from * across row, ending with 1 S. C. in joining st. of last popcorn. Repeat these 2 rows throughout.

AFGHANFinished size—27 x 34 inches. With bone crochet hook No. F, Ch 98 loosely (approximately 25 inches). Work 1 S. C. in 2nd st. from hook, work 1 S. C. in each ch across row; (97 S. C.). Turn, work 1 popcorn in first S. C., *skip 2 S, C., work 1 shell in next st., skip 2 S. C., work 1 popcorn in next st., and repeat from * across row; (16 shells and 17 popcorns in row) . Now start with Row 2 of pattern given above and repeat Rows 1 and 2 until there are 41 shell rows or until work measures 27 inches from beg., ending with Row 2 of pattern. Turn, work a very loose ch row as follows: *Ch 2, 1 S. C. in next S. C., ch 2, skip 4 S. C., 1 S. C. in next S. C., repeat from * across row, ending with 1 S. C. in last st. of row. Do not break thread.

BORDER—Border is worked loosely in D. C. With right side of work toward you, keeping work flat, ch 3, work 2 D. C. in corner st., work down side of afghan as follows: * 2 D. C. on side of each popcorn row and 1 D. C. on side of S. C. row. Repeat from * to corner; 3 D. C. in corner st., 1 D. C. in each foundation ch; 3 D. C. in corner; work to correspond with other side; 3 D. C. in corner; 1 D. C. in each ch and 1 D. C. in each S. C. across last row of body of afghan. Join with a slip st. in top of ch 3 at beg. of row. Ch 3 and turn. Work back and forth loosely in D. C. for 3 more rows, working 3 D. C. in each corner. Then work 1 row of shells and popcorns as on body of afghan, leaving 2 D. C. between each shell and each popcorn, but spacing pattern so there will be a shell in each corner. Fasten off. Run ribbon through border as shown in illustration.

SACQUEBACK SHOULDER—Using No. 3 hook, make a loose ch of 62 sts. Work 1 D. C. in 4th st. from hook and in each of remaining 58 chains; (60 D. C. in row, counting ch 3 at beg. of rows as 1 D. C.). Work even on these 60 sts. for 12 rows more. Fasten off.

FRONT SHOULDERS—Chain 36 loosely. Work 1 D. C. in 4th st. from hook and in each of remaining 32 chains; (34 D. C. in row, counting ch 3 at beg. of rows as 1 D. C.). Work even on these 34 D. C. for 12 rows more. Fasten off. Work another shoulder piece in same manner. Do not fasten off. Sew 21 sts. of front shoulders to 21 sts. of back shoulders. Turn, work 1 S. C. in each st. across front section, ch 6, work 1 S. C. in each st. of back section, ch 6, work 1 S. C. in each st. of other front section; (140 S. C. in row). Ch 3 and turn. Work in pattern as follows: Make a popcorn in first S. C. of row, *skip 2 sts., make a shell in next st., skip 3 sts., make a popcorn in next st. and repeat from * across row, ending with a popcorn in last st. of row; (20 shells and 21 popcorns in row). Ch 1 and turn. Work 1 S. C. in each st. Work in pattern as on afghan until 10 patterns in all have been worked from bottom of yoke; (20 rows). Turn, work 1 row of S. C. across bottom of jacket, up fronts, and around neck. Fasten off.

SLEEVES—Work 60 S. C. around armhole. Without turning, work 6 shells and 6 popcorns on these 60 sts. Then work back and forth in pattern as on body of jacket, joining with a slip st. at end of each round, until 10 complete patterns, (20 rows) have been worked. Turn, work 1 more round of S. C. around bottom of sleeve. Fasten off.

FINISHING—Turn back points of neck and tack in place. Sew on ribbon ties at neck.

BOOTEES—Using No. 3 hook, ch 36 and join to form ring. Ch 3 and work 35 D. C. on this chain. Join with a slip st. in top of ch 3; (36 D. C. in round, counting ch 3 at beg. of row). Ch 3, turn. Work back and forth in D. C. for 2 more rounds. Fasten off. With wrong side of last row toward you, work 1 D. C. in 11th D. C. from joining. Work 1 D. C. in each of next 15 sts.; (16 D. C. in row). Work back and forth on these 16 center sts. for 9 more rows for instep. Fasten off. Starting at center back of bootee and with right side of work toward you, work 10 D. C. to instep, 20 D. C. along side edge of instep, 16 D. C. across instep, 20 D. C. along other side edge of instep, and 10 D. C. to center back seam; (76 D. C. in round). Join, ch 3, turn. Work back and forth in D. C., dec. 1 st. each side of toe and 1 st. in center of toe on each of the next 2 rows. Then work 3 rows even. Fasten off. Sew bottom seam of bootee. Starting at center back seam, work 1 row of S. C. around top of bootee. Join with a slip st. to beg. of row. Do not turn. Ch 3, work a popcorn in first st., *skip 3 sts., work a shell in next st., skip 2 sts., work a popcorn in next st., and repeat from * for 1 round. Ch 1 to turn. Work 1 S. C. in each st. of previous round. Work back and forth for 2 more complete patterns as on afghan; (4 rows). Ch 1 and turn. Work 1 more round of S. C. Fasten off. Run ribbon in and out through a D. C. round at ankle for tie.

CAP—Ch 6 and join to form ring. Work as follows. Round 1—Ch 3 and work 11 D. C. in ring; (always count ch 3 at beg. of round as 1 D. C.). Join with a slip st. at beg. of round. Ch 3, turn. Round 2—Work 2 D. C. in each st. of round below; (24 D. C. in round). Round 3— * 2 D. C. in next st., 1 D. C. in next st., and repeat from * for 1 round; (36 D. C. in round). Round 4—* 2 D. C. in next st., 1 D. C. in each of next 2 sts., and repeat from * for 1 round (48 D. C. in round). Round 5—1 D. C. in each st. of round. Work 4 more inc. rounds, hav­ing 1 more D. C. between inc. on each round. Work 1 round even. Work 1 more inc. round (approximately 4½ inches in diameter). Work 2 rounds even. Fasten off. With wrong side of work toward you, start in 8th st. from center back seam, and work 1 D. C. in each st. to within 7 sts. of back seam; (94 sts. in row). Dec. 1 st. each end of the next 2 rows; (90 sts. in row). Work even for 9 rows more. Fasten off. Work 1 row of D. C. around bottom edge of cap. Fasten off.

TURNBACK—With wrong side of cap toward you, work 1 row of D. C. across front of cap. Ch 1, turn. Work 1 S. C. in each D. C. of row below. Ch 3, turn. Work as follows: Work 1 popcorn in first st., *skip 4 sts., work 1 shell in next st., skip 4 sts., work 1 popcorn in next st. and repeat from * across row. Ch 1, turn. Work 1 S. C. in each st. of row below. Work 2 more complete patterns; (4 rows). Ch 1, turn. Work 1 more row of S. C. Fasten off. Tack cuff in place. Make rosettes and ties of ribbon and tack in place. Run narrow ribbon in and out of first row of pattern on cuff next to turn­back. Tack ends in place.
