SIZE—Infant.

MATERIALS—SPIN­NERIN HEAVEN SPUN 4 balls or SPINNERIN CAN­DOUR 2 skeins; 1 steel Crochet Hook No. 4; 3 yds. satin rib­bon for ties.

GAUGE—7 S. C. = l inch. 8 rows = 1 inch. 4 shells = 3 inches. 7 rows = 2 inches. Ac­curate gauge is essential.

PATTERNYoke and Trimmings—Single Crochet. Body—Shell St.—Row 1—Ch 1, turn, work 2 D. C., ch 1, 2 D. C. (shell) in 3rd st., taking up back loop only. All shells are worked in back loop. *Skip 1 st., 1 S. C. in next st., skip 1 st., shell in next st., repeat from * across row, ending 1 S. C. in last st. Row 2—Ch 3, turn, 2 D. C. (half shell) in 1st st., * 1 S. C. in center of shell, 1 shell in back loop of next S. C., repeat from * across row, ending one half shell in last st. Row 3—Ch 1, turn, 1 S. C. in first D. C., *1 shell in back loop of next S. C., 1 S. C. in center of next shell and repeat from * across row, ending 1 S. C. in last st. Repeat Rows 2 and 3 for pattern.

SACQUE—Starting at yoke, ch 76 loosely, work 1 S. C. in second st. from hook. Work 1 S. C. in each remaining ch (75 S. C.). Work 1 row even. Inc. 1 in every 4th st. across row. Work 2 rows even. Inc. 1 in every 4th st. across row. Work 2 rows even. Inc. 1 in every 6th st. across row. Work 2 rows even. Inc. 1 in every 10th st. Work 2 rows even. Inc. 8 sts. at even intervals across next row. Work 2 rows even. Inc. 7 sts. at even intervals across row. Work 2 rows even. Now work rows 1 and 2 of shell pattern as given above. Work Row 3 as follows to start sleeves—Ch 1, turn, 1 S. C. in first D. C. *shell in next S. C., 1 S. C. in center of next shell, repeat from * 5 times more, **half shell in next S. C., ch 7 for underarm, skip 7 shells for sleeve, half shell in next S. C.**, * S. C. in next shell, shell in next S. C., repeat from * 11 times more. S. C. in next shell, repeat from ** to **, * S. C. in next shell, shell in next S. C., repeat from * 5 times more, S. C. in last st. Row 4—Ch 3, turn. Half shell in first st., *S. C. in shell, shell in next S. C., repeat from * 5 times more, ** S. C. in 2nd D. C. of half shell, skip first ch, shell in next ch, skip 1 ch, S. C. in next ch, skip 1 ch, shell in next ch, S. C. in first D. C. of half shell **, work across back sts. in pattern, repeat from ** to ** across second underarm. Work across front in pattern, ending with half shell in last st. Work back and forth in shell pattern as on Rows 2 and 3 of pat­tern given above until there are 20 rows of shells. Break yarn.

SLEEVES—With right side toward you, fasten yarn in S. C. at center of underarm, ch 1, work 1 shell in center of shell, 1 S. C. inside of half shell, * 1 shell in next S. C., 1 S. C. in next shell, repeat from * 6 times more, 1 shell in next S. C., S. C. inside of half shell, shell in next shell, 1 S. C. in next st. (in same st. as first st. of row), (10 shells). Ch 3, turn, work back and forth in same manner as on body, joining each row at underarm before turning, until there are 18 rows of shells from end of yoke. Work 1 S. C. in each D. C. and each S. C. of previous row (40 sts.). Work back and forth in S. C. for 5 rows. Make edge as follows: Ch 1 * skip 1 st., 2 D. C. in next st., ch 3, slip st. in top of last D. C., 2 more D. C. in same st., skip 2 sts., 1 S. C. in next st., repeat from * to end of row, ending with slip st. in last st. Fasten off.

EDGING—Starting at right neck edge, ch 3, 1 D. C. in next st., *ch 2, skip 2 sts. 1 D. C. in each of next 2 sts., repeat from * around neck, ending 1 D. C. in each of last 2 sts. Work down left front, around bottom and up right front in picot pattern as on bottom of sleeves. Be sure to keep work flat. Run ribbon through beading at neck for ties.

CAP A—Ch 4, join with slip st. to form ring. Ch 1, work 6 S. C. in ring. Work back and forth in S. C., joining each row with a slip st. in first st. of row, and inc. 6 sts. at even intervals in each row until there are 13 rows in all (approxi­mately 5 inches in diameter). Work 1 row of shell pattern, skipping 1 st. be­tween shells and S. C.'s. Join with slip st. (20 shells). Ch 1, turn, slip st. to center of first shell, ch 1, *shell in next S. C., S. C. in next shell, repeat from * until there are 16 shells, 1 S. C. in next shell. Ch 3, turn, leaving 4 shells for back. Work back and forth in shell pat­tern until there are 11 rows of shells. Work 4 rows S. C. across front. Work 2 rows all around front and back.

TURNBACK—With wrong side of cap toward you to start, work 2 rows of S. C. across front. Inc. 1 S. C. in center of turn­back. Work 1 row even. Inc. 1 S. C. in 3rd st. each side of center. Work 1 row even. Inc. 1 S. C. in center. Work 1 row even. Inc. 1 S. C. in 5th st. each side of center. Work 1 row even. Inc. 1 S. C. in center and in 7th st. each side of center. Work 1 row even. Work 2 rows across front around back. Work 1 row of picot trim as on sacque all around cap. Sew ribbon ties in place.

CAP B—Work in same manner as Cap A until the shell pattern is com­pleted. Then work 2 rows of S. C. across front, then 4 rows of S. C. all around front and back of cap, working 3 S. C. in corners to keep work flat. Work 1 row of picot trim as on sacque edging, all around cap.

BOOTEES—Ch 32 and join. Work back and forth in S. C. on 12 sts. for 12 rows, for instep. Then work in S. C. down side of instep piece, around back on original ch and along other side of in­step piece. Approximately 58 sts. Work 7 rounds of S. C. On 8th round, dec. 1 at center front and 1 at center back. Fasten off. Sew sole of bootee. Tie in yarn at center back and work 1 D. C. in each of 32 sts. around top of bootee. Join with slip st. in first st. of row. Ch 3, turn. Work back and forth in D. C. for 2 more rows. Work 5 rows of shell pattern. Work edging around top of bootee in same man­ner as on sleeves of sacque.
