½ yd. Brown for Eyes.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 7.

With White ch 38, 1 d c in 4th st from hook, 1 d c in each of the next 14 chs, 1 s d c in next ch, (s d c: thread over insert in st, pull through and work off all loops at one time), 1 s c in each of the next 2 chs, 1 s d c in next ch, 1 d c in each of the next 16 chs, ch 4, turn.
2nd Row—3 d c in 4th st from hook, 1 d c in each of the next 17 sts, 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts, 1 d c in each of the next 16 d c, 3 d c in end st, ch 3, turn.
3rd Row—2 d c in 1st d c, 1 d c in each st across row working 2 d c in end st, ch 3, turn.
4th Row—1 d c in each d c increasing 1 d c at beginning of row and increasing 2 d c at end of row, ch 3, turn.
5th and 6th Rows—Increase 1 d c at beginning of each row.
7th Row—Decrease 1 d c at the beginning of row.
8th Row—Same as 4th row.
9th and 10th Rows—Same as 5th and 6th rows.
11th Row—Decrease 1 d c at end of row. Work 1 row even.
13th Row—Increased 1 d c at beginning of row and decrease 1 d c at end of row. Work 1 row even.
15th Row—Decrease 1 d c at beginning and end of row.
16th Row—Decrease 1 d c at end of row.
17th Row—Decrease 1 d c at beginning of row. Work 3 rows even.
21st Row—Increase 1 d c at beginning of row and decrease 1 d c at end of row.
Next 3 Rows—Decrease 1 d c at end of each row.
25th Row—Decrease 1 d c at beginning of row and increase 1 d c at end of row.
26th Row—Decrease 1 d c at end of row.
27th Row—Increase 1 d c at each end.
28th and 29th Rows—Increase 2 sts at beginning of each row.
30th Row—Decrease 2 sts at beginning of row.

33rd Row—Skip 1 st, s c in next st, 1 s d c in next st, 1 d c in each of the next 30 sts, 1 s d c in each of the next 5 sts, 1 s c in each of the next 3 sts, sl st in next st, ch 1, turn.
34th Row—Skip 1 st, s c in next st, 1 s d c in each of the next 16 sts, 1 d c in each of the next 16 sts, 1 s d c in each of the next 4 sts, 1 s c in next st, sl st in next st, ch 1, turn.
35th Row—Skip 1 st, 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts, 1 s d c in each of the next 3 sts, 1 d c in each of the next 2 sts, 1 tr c in each of the next 7 sts, 1 d c in each of the next 2 sts, 1 s d c in each of the next 2 sts, 1 s c in next st, sl st in next st, break thread and work another section in same manner.
With Red, crochet the 2 sections together with a row of s c working 2 s c in each row on sides and 2 s c in every other st across top and lower edge. With Black "Star" Six Strand Embroidery Cotton, embroider the face as illustrated using an outline stitch and having the face about 3¾ inches long at center. The eyes are 1¼ inches down from top of head. The legs are 2½ inches long at center and 3¼ inches long at sides. The pupil of eye is Brown using a satin stitch and the mouth is Red.
RING. With Red, wrap around 1 finger 3 times, remove from finger and work 28 s c over ring. Sew to top of potholder.
