Materials Required—

"PURITAN" MERCERIZED CROCHET
AND KNITTING COTTON
106 yds. White.
"STAR" PEARL COTTON, SIZE 5
45 yds. Red.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 7.

With White, ch 69, d c in 9th st from hook, * ch 2, skip 2 chs, d c in next ch, repeat from * across ch, ch 5, turn.
2nd Row—D c in d c, * ch 2, d c in next d c, repeat from * 18 times, ch 2, skip 2 chs, d c in next ch, ch 5, turn. Repeat 2nd row 19 times, break thread.
The pattern is darned in using 4 strands of thread by working 2 rows through each mesh. Start in corner mesh, darn to next corner and then darn to next corner forming right angle, working over 1 d c and under the next reversing the over and under in the 2nd row of each mesh.
Darn 3 meshes in White, 3 meshes Red, 2 meshes White, 2 meshes Red, 2 meshes White, 1 mesh Red, 2 meshes White, 1 mesh Red, 2 meshes White, 3 meshes Red. Then with Red, darn through center meshes as illustrated.
Work another section in same manner. With Red, crochet the 2 sections together. Join thread in corner, * ch 3, 2 d c in same space, skip length of shell, s c in next space, repeat from * all around working a loop in corner as illustrated, (loop: ch 20, s c in same st and work 26 s c over ring, sl st in same space.)
