Materials Required—
AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY
"PURITAN" MERCERIZED CROCHET
AND KNITTING COTTON
55 yds. White.
"STAR" PEARL COTTON, SIZE 5
93 yds. Red, 25 yds. Black, 2 yds. Yellow, and 56 yds. Green.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 7.

With Black, ch 6, join to form a ring, ch 3, 24 d c in ring, join in ch 3, break thread.
PETAL. Attach Red in st and start petals, ch 4, 3 tr c in same st, 4 tr c in each of the next 4 sts, ch 4, turn.
Next Row—3 tr c in tr c, 1 tr c in each tr c, 4 tr c in 4th st of ch, ch 4, turn.
Next 2 Rows—Repeat last row, ch 4, turn.
Next 3 Rows—Work even, ch 4, turn.
Next Row—1 tr c in each st working 2 tr c in 4th st of ch, ch 1, turn.
Next Row—* Skip 2 tr c, 5 tr c with ch 1 between each tr c in next tr c, skip 2 tr c, s c in next st, repeat from * across row, break thread.
Join Red in next d c and continue working petals in same manner until there are 5 petals.
With Black, work a row of s c on sides of petals working an s c in each tr c and an s c between scallops and working a ch 1 over ch 1 of last row of petals.
With Black, starting at center and working into 3rd row embroider petals as illustrated using long and short st. Tack petals together as illustrated and finish center with French knots.
BACK. With White, work 11 rows same as back for Pansy potholder, break thread.
Next Row—Attach Green, ch 3, turn and work 1 row of d c, increasing 1 d c in every 7th st, join in 3rd st of ch.
Next Row—** Ch 3 and work 1 d c in each of the next 11 d c, ch 3, turn.
Next Row—Working in back loop of st only, * thread over, insert in next d c, pull through and work off 2 loops, repeat from *, thread over and work off all loops at one time, (a decrease) 1 d c in each of the next 8 d c, * thread over, insert in next st, pull through and work off 2 loops, repeat from *, thread over and work off all loops at one time, (a decrease) ch 3, turn.
Work 2 more rows of d c decreasing at beginning and end of each row in same manner, ch 3, turn.
Next Row—* Thread over, insert hook in next st, pull through and work off 2 loops, repeat from * 5 times, thread over and work off all loops at one time, break thread.
Attach Green in next d c and repeat from ** all around. With Green, work a row of s c all around working a loop between petals as illustrated. (Loop: ch 20, s c in same space and cover loop with s c).
Tack flower section to back section as illustrated.
