Steel crochet hook No. 8.

GAUGE: 4 sps make 1 inch; 4 rnds make 1 inch. Completed block measures 7½ inches square. For a single size spread about 72 x 108 inches including fringe, make 9 x 14 blocks. For a double size spread about 90 x 108 inches including fringe, make 12 x 14 blocks.

BLOCK … Starting at center, ch 9. 1st rnd: In 9th ch from hook make (dc, ch 5) 3 times. Join with sl st in 4th st of 1st ch made. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, in next sp make 3 dc, ch 5 and 3 dc; * dc in next dc, in next sp make 3 dc, ch 5 and 3 dc. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st in top st of 1st ch-3. 3rd rnd: Ch 3, dc in next 3 dc, * in next sp make 3 dc, ch 5 and 3 dc; dc in 7 dc. Repeat from * around. Join. 4th rnd: Ch 3, dc in 3 dc, * ch 2, skip 2 dc, dc in next dc, in next sp make 3 dc, ch 5 and 3 dc; dc in next dc, ch 2, skip 2 dc, dc in 7 dc. Repeat from * around. Join. 5th rnd: Ch 5, skip 2 dc, dc in next dc, * ch 2, dc in 4 dc, in corner sp make 3 dc, ch 5 and 3 dc; dc in 4 dc, ch 2, dc in next dc, (ch 2, skip 2 dc, dc in next dc) twice. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st in 3rd st of 1st ch made. Ch 5 for beginning of 6th rnd and follow chart for remainder of block, making ch 5 at corners. The 1st sp of 6th rnd is indicated by "X" on chart. Beginning of rnds is indicated on chart by heavy line.
   Make necessary number of blocks and sew together on wrong side with neat over-and-over stitches.

TASSELS … Use a piece of cardboard 4 inches wide; place 2 strands each 5 inches long across length of cardboard. Wind 1 strand of thread 65 times around width of cardboard. Break off. Pick up the 5-inch lengths and tie securely. Slip tassel off cardboard, cut strands at untied end. Wind thread around tassel near top and tie. Trim evenly. Sew a tassel to edge of spread at each joining of blocks and at each corner on 1 narrow and 2 long edges.

FRINGE … Cut twelve 10-inch strands of thread. Double the strands forming a loop. Insert hook in sp following a corner sp on edge and pull loop through; then pull loose ends through loop and pull tight. Make 8 fringes evenly in sps on edge of each block. Block to measurements given.
