GAUGE: Each block measures about 5½ inches square and 7¾ inches diagonally before blocking. For single size spread about 70 x 103 inches, make 213 motifs. For double size spread about 86 x 103 inches, make 263 motifs.
FIRST BLOCK … Ch 6, join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 3, 15 dc in ring. Join with sl st in top st of 1st ch-3. 2nd rnd: Ch 6 (to count as dc and ch-3), dc in same place as sl st, * ch 2, skip next dc, in next dc make dc, ch 3 and dc. Repeat from * around, joining last ch-2 to 3rd st of 1st ch-6. 3rd rnd: Ch 3 (to count as dc), 4 dc in next ch-3 sp, drop loop from hook, insert hook in top of 1st ch-3 and pull dropped loop through (starting pc st made); * ch 2, dc in next ch-2 sp, ch 2, 5 dc in next ch-3 sp, drop loop from hook, insert hook in top of 1st dc of this group and pull dropped loop through (pc st made). SECOND BLOCK … Work as for 1st block to 9th rnd incl. 10th rnd: Sl st to next sp, ch 3, in same sp make dc and tr; ch 3, sl st in corner sp of 1st block, ch 3, in same sp on 2nd block make tr and 2 dc; (ch 3, sl st in next loop on 1st block, ch 3, sc in next loop on 2nd block) 8 times; ch 3, sl st in next loop on 1st block, ch 3, in corner sp on 2nd block make 2 dc and tr; ch 3, sl st in corner sp of 1st block, ch 3, in same sp on 2nd block make tr and dc. Complete rnd as for 1st motif (no more joinings). Fasten off. Join all motifs in the same way (where 4 corners meet, join 3rd and 4th corners to joining of previous corners).
For single size spread make 213 blocks in all, joining them as follows: 1st row: 1 block. 2nd row: 3 blocks (one block extending on each side of 1st row). 3rd row: 5 blocks. 4th row: 7 blocks. Continue in this manner having 2 more blocks on each row until there are 17 blocks on row. Make 4 more rows of 17 blocks each, having 1 block extend beyond left edge and having 1 block less on right edge. Now make 2 blocks less on each row (1 block less on each side) until last row has one motif.
For double size spread make 263 motifs. Join as for single size spread until there are 21 blocks on row. Make 2 more rows of 21 blocks and continue as for single size spread.
EDGING … Attach thread in corner sp (following a joining) of single corner block. Ch 1, sc in same sp, * ch 2, in center st of same corner sp make 3 tr, ch 5 and 3 tr; ch 2, sc in same sp, (in center st of next loop make 3 tr, ch 5 and 3 tr, sc in next loop) 5 times. Repeat from * once more. Ch 5, sc in next corner sp. Continue thus around. Join and fasten off.
TASSELS … Cut a cardboard 5 inches wide and 4 inches long. Lay two 8-inch strands of thread across the length of cardboard. Wind thread 65 times around width of cardboard over the 8-inch strands. Slip off cardboard and tie ends of 8-inch strands. Cut loops at bottom of tassel. Wind thread several times around about inch from top and fasten securely. Make 32 tassels for single size and 34 tassels for double size and sew to edge as in illustration along one narrow and two long edges.
