Fluffy Ruffles Bedspread Pattern #6104

MATERIALS:
J. & P. COATS BIG BALL BEST SIX CORD MERCERIZED CROCHET, SIZE 10
SINGLE SIZE
42 balls of White or Ecru, 11½ yards of 36-inch chintz for spread and 1 pillow.
DOUBLE SIZE
59 balls of White or Ecru, 15 yards of 36-inch chintz for spread and 2 pillows.
Steel crochet hook No. 6 or 7.

GAUGE: 4 sps make 1 inch; 4 rows make 1 inch.

TOP … Make a chain (10 ch sts to 1 inch) 50" (single), 65" (double).
1st row:
Dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in next 2 ch, * (ch 2, skip 2 ch, dc in next ch) 7 times; dc in next 3 ch. Repeat from * 19 more times (single), 27 more times (double).
Ch 5, turn. Cut off remaining chain.
2nd row: Skip 2 dc, dc in next dc (sp over bl), * 2 dc in next sp, dc in next dc (bl over sp), (ch 2, dc in next dc) 5 times (5 sps over 5 sps); bl over next sp, ch 2, skip 2 dc, dc in next dc (sp over bl). Repeat from * 19 more times (single), 27 more times (double).
Ch 5, turn.
3rd row: 2 sps, * 1 bl, 3 sps. Repeat from * across, ending with 1 bl, 2 sps. Ch 5, turn. 4th row: 3 sps, * 1 bl, 1 sp, 1 bl, 5 sps. Repeat from * across, ending with 1 bl, 1 sp, 1 bl, 3 sps. Ch 5, turn. 5th row: 4 sps, * 1 bl, 7 sps. Repeat from * across, ending with 1 bl, 4 sps. Ch 5, turn. 6th row: Same as 4th row. Ch 5, turn. 7th row: Same as 3rd row. Ch 5, turn. 8th row: 1 sp, * 1 bl, 5 sps, 1 bl, 1 sp. Repeat from * across. Ch 3, turn. 9th row: 1 bl, * 7 sps, 1 bl. Repeat from * across. Ch 5, turn.
The last 8 rows (2nd to 9th incl) constitute the pattern. Repeat pattern until piece measures about 76 inches and have pattern correspond with beginning. Fasten off.

BOTTOM RUFFLE … Make a chain (11 ch sts to 1 inch) 40" (single), 55" (double).
1st row: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 6, turn. 2nd row: Sc in next dc, * ch 6, sc in next dc. Repeat from * across, ch 6, sc in top st of turning ch. Ch 8, turn. 3rd and 4th rows: Sc in next loop, * ch 6, sc in next loop. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in last loop. Ch 8, turn. 5th, 6th and 7th rows: Make ch-7 loops across. Ch 9, turn. 8th to 11th rows incl: Make ch-8 loops across. Ch 10, turn. 12th to 16th rows incl: Make ch-9 loops across. Ch 11, turn. 17th to 20th rows incl: Make ch-10 loops across. Ch 12, turn. Fasten off at end of 20th row.

SIDE RUFFLE … Make a chain 76 inches long. Work same as Bottom Ruffle. Make another Side Ruffle same as this.
Block top piece to measure 40 x 76 inches for single size spread, or 55 x 76 inches for double size spread. Starch and press ruffles. Sew foundation chains of ruffles to corresponding edges of top.

PILLOW RUFFLES—Long Edges … Make a chain 28 inches long (or 1 inch longer than length of pillow). Work same as Bottom Ruffle until 13th row is complete. Fasten off. Make another piece same as this.
Narrow Edges … Make a chain 22 inches long (or 1 inch longer than width of pillow). Work same as Bottom Ruffle. Fasten off. Make another piece same as this. Starch and press ruffles. Then make chintz pillow case as follows: Cut 2 pieces of chintz each 22 x 28 inches for case. For frill cut 4 pieces each 4 x 36 inches and join them in. a long strip. Make a narrow hem along one long edge of strip. Gather opposite long edge to measure 96 inches. Place the pillow case pieces together, right sides facing. Insert frill between these pieces, having gathered edge along edges of pillow pieces. Baste in place. Stitch around two long sides and one short side. Hem remaining short side and stitch remainder of frill to hemmed edge on one side only, thus leaving opening for pillow. Sew short edges of frill together. Close with snap fasteners. Place crocheted ruffles on top of chintz frills and tack in place.

CHINTZ SPREADS—For Single Size ... Cut a piece of chintz 36 x 77 inches. Cut another piece 5 x 77 inches. Sew these pieces together along one long edge (top of spread). Hem one 40-inch edge for head of bed. For Bottom Ruffle, cut a piece 23 x 73 inches. Make a narrow hem on short ends and on one long edge. Gather remaining long edge to measure 40 inches. With right sides facing, baste gathered edge of ruffle and foot-end of top together. Machine stitch in place. For Side Ruffle, cut four 23-inch lengths. Sew short ends, thus forming a strip about 142 x 23 inches. Make a narrow hem on short ends and on one long edge. Gather remaining long edge to measure 76 inches. Sew to long edge of top same as Bottom Ruffle. Make another Side Ruffle in same way and sew to remaining long side.
For Double Size … Cut a piece of chintz 36 x 77 inches. Cut another piece 20 x 77 inches. Sew these pieces together along one long edge (top of spread). Make Side Ruffles same as on single size chintz spread. Make Bottom Ruffle same as Side Ruffles, using only three 23-inch lengths.
