This Hat and Tote Bag can be made with:

“GEM” HAT and BAG YARN, Article 144.
2 skeins each Brown, White and Black for Hat.
5 skeins Brown.
1 skein each White and Black for Bag.
Plastic crochet hook size J.

GAUGE: 7 s c = 2 inches - 7 rows = 2 inches.

TOTE BAG

With Brown ch 18, 3 s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each of the next 15 sts of ch, 3 s c in last st, working on opposite side of ch, 1 s c in each of the next 15 sts, do not join this or following rounds.

2nd Round. 2 s c in each of the next 3 sts, 1 s c in each of the next 15 sts, 2 s c in each of the next 3 sts, 1 s c in each of the next 15 sts.

3rd Round. S c in next s c, 2 s c in each of the next 4 s c, 1 s c in each of the next 17 s c, 2 s c in each of the next 4 s c, 1 s c in each of the next 16 s c.

4th Round. * 1 s c in each of the next 2 s c, 2 s c in each of the next 6 s c, 1 s c in each of the next 17 s c, repeat from * all around.

5th Round. * 1 s c in each of the next 5 s c, 2 s c in each of the next 6 s c, 1 s c in each of the next 20 s c, repeat from * all around.

6th Round. * 1 s c in each of the next 6 s c, 2 s c in next s c, 1 s c in each of the next 8 s c, 2 s c in next s c, 1 s c in each of the next 21 s c, repeat from * all around.

7th Round. * 1 s c in each of the next 6 s c, 2 s c in next s c, 1 s c in each of the next 3 s c, 2 s c in next s c, 1 s c in each of the next 2 s c, 2 s c in next s c, 1 s c in each of the next 3 s c, 2 s c in next s c, 1 s c in each of the next 21 s c, repeat from * all around, sl st in each of the next 2 sts to even round, turn.

8th Round. Working over entire st by inserting hook from front to back and to front again, work 1 s c over each s c, join, turn.

9th Round. 1 s c in each s c, do not join this or following rounds. Repeat the last round 32 times or until bag measures 9 ½ inches from 8th round, sl st in next 2 sts to even round, cut yarn.

BAND: Work same as band for hat long enough to fit around top of bag, sew short ends together, sew long edges together. Sew long edge to 3rd round from top of bag. Flatten band out and sew top edge of bag to band.

HANDLE: With Brown crochet a chain 14 inches long, s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each remaining st of ch, ch 1, turn.

2nd Row. 1 s c in each s c, cut yarn leaving a length for sewing. Fold in half lengthwise and sew edges. Work another handle in same manner. Sew to inside of bag placing them as illustrated starting about 2 ½ inches down from top. Cut cardboard to fit lower part of bag. Place inside of bag.
