Trailing Arbutus Bag Pattern #2055

Materials: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 2 balls of color 78 Turquoise and 1 ball of 88 Peach; or Clark's O.N.T. Knit-Crochet, 5 balls of Turquoise and 1 ball of Peach. Milward's steel crochet hook No. 5 and No. 2. Two wooden handles.

With No. 5 hook, using Turquoise, ch 107, turn. 1st row: D c in 5th ch from hook, * ch 1, skip 1 st, d c in next (1 sp). Repeat from * across (52 sps). Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Thread over (as for making d c), draw loop through 1st sp, thread over, work off 2 loops, thread over, * draw loop through next sp, thread over and work off 2 loops, thread over and draw thread through 3 remaining loops on hook, ch 1, thread over, draw loop through same sp, thread over, work off 2 loops.

Repeat mesh st from * 4 more times, work d c in next d c. Make sps over each of next 12 sps, mesh st over next 16 sps, sps over next 12 sps, mesh st over next 6 sps. End with d c in last st, ch 3, turn. Repeat 2nd row 67 more times. Finish with a row of sps to correspond to beginning.

Flowers: With Peach, using No. 2 hook, make a ch a yard long, turn. * S c in 2nd ch from hook, d c in each of next 4 ch, s c in next ch (1 petal), ch 7, turn and repeat from * until 3 petals are made. Sl st at base of 1st petal, sl st in each of next 7 sts of foundation ch. Ch 7, and repeat from * until 3 petals are made. Continue in this way for necessary length. Make another strip, and appliqué to filet sections as in illustration. Sew up sides of bag to within 3 inches from top.

Attach thread at top corner, and make a row of s c down the 3-inch opening and up other side of opening, * then ch 24, insert handle and leaving about 12 sts around handle, s c into next st of ch, and s c in each st of ch. 5 s c along top of bag. Repeat from * 10 more times. Then s c along opening on other side, and attach 2nd handle in same way.
