Applique Basket and Edgings Pattern

Materials Required: AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY
The Famous "PURITAN" MERCERIZED CROCHET COTTON, Article 40 or
"DE LUXE" Quality MERCERIZED CROCHET COTTON, Article 346
2 balls Shaded Yellows or
The Famous "PURITAN" STAR SPANGLED MERCERIZED CROCHET COTTON, Article 40
4 balls Yellow Spangle or color of your choice.
Steel crochet hook No. 7
1 Turkish bath towel
1 Turkish wash cloth

Ch 38, d c in 4th st from hook, 1 d c in each remaining st of ch.
2nd Row—Ch 3, turn, 1 d c in each d c. Repeat the 2nd row 6 times.
9th Row—Ch 6, turn, 2 d c in same space keeping last loop of each d c on hook, thread over and pull through all loops at one time (a 2 d c cluster st), * ch 1, skip 4 d c, 2 d c cluster st in next d c, ch 3, 2 d c cluster st in same space, repeat from * 5 times, ch 1, skip 4 d c, 2 d c cluster st in next d c, ch 3, d c in same space.
10th Row—Ch 6, turn, 2 d c cluster st in same space with ch 6, * ch 1, skip the ch 3 loop, 2 d c cluster st in next ch 1 space, ch 3, 2 d c cluster st in same space, repeat from * across row ending row with ch 1, 2 d c cluster st in 3rd st of end ch, ch 3, d c in same space. Repeat the last row 16 times.
Next Row—Ch 3, turn, 2 d c in 1st loop, * s c in next ch 3 loop, ch 3, 2 d c in same loop (shell), repeat from * across row, ending row with s c in 3rd st of end ch, ch 3, turn.
Next Row—2 d c in same space, s c in ch 3 loop of next shell, * ch 3, 2 d c in same space, s c in ch 3 loop of next shell, repeat from * across row, then work a row of s c down side of basket to within 2nd row from lower edge, work a shell over side of next row, across lower edge and over opposite side of same row finishing remainder of side in s c, cut thread.

HANDLE—Ch 139, 2 d c in 4th st from hook, skip 2 sts of ch, s c in next st, * ch 3, 2 d c in same space (shell), skip 2 sts of ch, s c in next st, repeat from * across ch working 1 s c in end ch, 6 d c in same space, working on other side of ch work in shells to correspond to 1st side, cut thread.

EDGE—Ch 6, 2 d c in 6th st from hook keeping last loop of each d c on hook, thread over and pull through all loops at one time, ch 3, 2 d c cluster st in same space.
2nd Row—Ch 5, turn, 2 - 2 d c cluster sts with ch 3 between in ch 3 loop.
3rd Row—Same as 2nd row, then ch 3 and without turning and working across lower edge, work 6 d c with ch 1 between each d c in next loop, s c in 1st ch made, ch 3, turn.
4th Row—S c in next ch 1 space between next 2 d c, * ch 4, s c in next ch 1 space, repeat from * 3 times, ch 3, skip 1 loop, 2 - 2 d c cluster sts with ch 3 between in next loop, ch 5, turn.
5th and 6th Rows—2 - 2 d c cluster sts with ch 3 between in next loop, ch 5 to turn each row.
7th Row—2 - 2 d c cluster sts with ch 3 between in next loop, ch 3 and working across lower edge, work 6 d c with ch 1 between each d c in next loop, ch 1, s c in next loop of previous scallop, ch 3, turn. Repeat from 4th row for length desired ending with 4th row of pattern, do not ch 5 at end of last row, cut thread.
With "STAR" MERCERIZED SEWING THREAD, sew to lower edge of towel. Sew basket in position on towel as illustrated leaving top of basket open for face cloth. Sew handle in position on towel.

EDGE FOR FACE CLOTH—Ch 6, 2 d c in 6th st from hook leaving last loop of each d c on hook, thread over and pull through all loops at one time, ch 3, 2 d c cluster st in same space, ch 5, turn.
2nd Row—2 - 2 d c cluster sts with ch 3 between in the ch 3 loop, ch 5, turn.
3rd Row—Sl st in 3rd st from hook for picot, ch 2, 2 - 2 d c cluster sts with ch 3 between in loop between cluster sts of previous row, ch 5, turn. Repeat the 2nd and 3rd rows for length desired omitting ch 5 at end of last row, cut thread. Sew around face cloth as illustrated.
