Salem Afghan Pattern #6607

Size—About 54 x 72 inches

This Afghan is typical of the New England of Colonial Days. It is simple in design, made for warmth and durability, and is especially suitable to use with the sturdy Colonial furniture.

MATERIALS REQUIRED:

MINERVA MILADY KNITTING YARN (4 ounce skeins)
1 Skein each of 12 Assorted Colors
1 Skein of Black to join Squares
1 Skein each of 2 contrasting Colors for Border
—OR—
MINERVA AFGHAN GERMANTOWN (2 ounce skeins)
2 Skeins each of 12 Assorted Colors
2 Skeins of Black to join Squares
2 Skeins each of 2 contrasting Colors for Border
Follow instructions as written for Knitting Yarn substituting instructions in italics for Germantown.

1 AFGHAN HOOK—Size 8—10 inch

GAUGE: Knitting Yarn—4 Sts. to 1 inch
Germantown—8½ Sts. to 2 inches

1 TAPESTRY NEEDLE

TO MAKE A SQUARE:

With Knitting Yarn Ch. 36, (Germantown Ch. 38).
ROW 1—Draw up 1 loop in each Ch., leaving all loops on hook (36 loops), (Germantown 38 loops), then take off as follows: Y.O. hook, draw through 1
loop, * Y.O. hook, draw through 2 loops, repeat from * across row.
ROW 2—Draw up 1 loop in each upright St., leaving all loops on hook, then take off same as Row 1.
Repeat Row 2 until Square measures 9 inches (24 rows), (Germantown 27 rows)

1 Skein will make 4 Squares, (Germantown 2 Squares).

Make 48 Squares and join them 6 x 8 with Black, by working 1 row of S.C. on right side, then work 1 row of S.C. all around Afghan, increasing 2 Sts. at corners.

BORDER:

ROW 1—With first Border Color work 1 D.C. in each St. (3 Sts. in each corner St.) all around Afghan.
ROW 2—Join second Border Color, work * 1 S.C. in D.C., skip 2 D.C., 4 D.C. in next D.C., skip 2 D.C., repeat from * around row, increasing at corners.
With contrasting Color, using darning needle and double strand of yarn, weave through center St. of each Square crosswise as illustrated.
