Charleston Afghan Pattern #6600

Size—About 50 x 54 inches

The delicate beauty of the Old South is portrayed in this dainty Afghan made in tiny jewel-like squares. It takes such a short time to make one of these squares, that the Afghan can be completed in a jiffy.

MATERIALS REQUIRED:

MINERVA MILADY KNITTING YARN (4 ounce skeins)
13 Skeins—Assorted Colors
3 Skeins—Black
—OR—
MINERVA AFGHAN GERMANTOWN (2 ounce skeins)
22 Skeins—Assorted Colors
5 Skeins—Black

1 No. 2 STEEL CROCHET HOOK

GAUGE: 3 Sts. to ½ inch.
(Finished Square measures about 2¾ inches.)

TO MAKE A SQUARE.

ROW 1—Ch. 3, join in ring with a slip St., Ch. 2, 2 D.C. in ring, * Ch. 1, 3 D.C. in ring, repeat from * 2 times more, Ch. 1, Slip St. to 2nd Ch. at beginning of row, break yarn, fasten.
ROW 2—With 2nd Color fasten yarn in one of the four corners, Ch. 2, 2 D.C. in same space, Ch. 1, 3 D.C. in same space, Ch. 1, * 3 D.C. in next space, Ch. 1, 3 D.C. in same space, Ch. 1, repeat from * 2 times more, Slip St. to 2nd Ch. at beginning of row, break yarn, fasten.
ROW 3—With 3rd Color fasten yarn in one corner, Ch. 2, 2 D.C. in same space, Ch. 1, 3 D.C. in same space, Ch. 1, * 3 D.C. in next space, Ch. 1, 3 D.C. in next space, Ch. 1, 3 D.C. in same space (drawing the 2 corner Sts. up slightly higher to form sharp corner), Ch. 1, repeat from * around row, ending 3 D.C. in next space, Ch. 1, Slip St. to 2nd Ch. at begin­ning of row, break yarn, fasten.
ROW 4—With Black work 3 S.C. in corner, 1 S.C. between each of the next 2 D.C., 2 S.C. in next space of Ch. 1, continue in this manner around row, break yarn and fasten.

These 4 rows complete 1 Square.

Make 388 Squares, sew together as illustrated forming scalloped edge.
      13 Squares in first row across
      12 Squares in 2nd row across
Repeat these 2 rows 14 times more, then one more row of 13 Squares.

BORDER:

ROWS 1 and 2—With Black work 1 S.C. in each St., increasing at outside corners and decreasing at inside corners to keep work flat.
ROW 3—Join first Border Color, Ch. 2, * 1 D.C. in 3rd St., 1 D.C. in 2nd St. (crossing the Sts.), repeat from * around.
ROW 4—With Black work 1 S.C. in each St. around.
ROW 5—With 2nd Border Color work 1 S.C. in each St. around.
ROW 6—With 3rd Border Color work * 1 S.C., Ch. 2, 1 S.C. in same St., skip 1 St., repeat from * around.
