Materials: J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, 2 balls.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 2.

Gauge: 6 sts make 1 inch; 8 rnds make 1 inch.

1st rnd: With double thread, ch 3 and make 7 s c in 3rd ch from hook. 2nd rnd: 2 s c in each s c. 3rd to 9th rnds incl: S c in each s c, increasing 7 sts at regular intervals, in each rnd. (To increase 1 st, make 2 s c in 1 sc.) 10th rnd: Work a rnd of s c over previous rnd, but inserting hook at the base of each s c (instead of the usual way) and increasing in every 10th s c. 11th rnd: Ch 5, * skip 2 s c, d c in next s c, ch 3, repeat from * around. Join last ch-3 with sl st in 3rd st of ch-5 first made. 12th rnd: * Ch 3, skip ch-3, sl st in next d c, repeat from * around. 13th rnd: 3 s c in each sp and 1 s c in each d c, working over the 2 previous rnds. 14th to 20th rnds incl: S c in each s c around. 21st, 22nd and 23rd rnds: Repeat 10th, 11th and 12th rnds, but without increasing. 24th rnd: * 2 s c in sp, s c in d c, 2 s c in sp, s c in d c, 3 s c in sp, s c in d c. Repeat from * around. 25th to 31st rnds incl: S c in each s c around, increasing 4 sts in 30th rnd only. 32nd, 33rd and 34th rnds: Repeat 21st, 22nd and 23rd rnds. 35th rnd: * 2 s c in sp, s c in d c, 3 s c in sp, s c in d c, repeat from * around. 36th to 42nd rnds incl: S c in each s c around, increasing 3 s c in 39th rnd only. 43rd, 44th and 45th rnds: Repeat 21st, 22nd and 23rd rnds. 46th to 52nd rnds incl: S c in each s c around. 53rd rnd: Repeat 21st rnd. Break off.

Trimming. Cut 16 strands of thread, each about 14 inches long. Starting at center front of hat, draw through the top row of spaces, under 1 d c and over 2 d c. Tie a double knot with the two ends, over the joining of rnds. Cut both ends evenly. Finish each rnd of spaces in the same way.
