Embroidered Gauntlet Pattern #2241

Medium Size

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. (4 balls) or J. & P. Coats (3 balls) Mercerized Crochet, size 50, White.
Clark's O.N.T. "Brilliant", 1 ball each of 3 contrasting colors for trimming.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 12.

The four fingers of the glove are made first, then sewed together and the palm formed. The thumb is made separately, and attached to the opening left in palm.

Left Hand.

Forefinger: Starting at tip, ch 5, join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 4 (to count as d c and ch-1), * d c in ring, ch 1. Repeat from * 11 times (12 ch-sps). Join last ch-1 to 3rd st of ch-4 first made. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, * then make a cross st (to make a cross st, d c in 1st ch-1, ch 5, d c in d c last made), then thread over hook twice, insert hook in same ch-1 as previous d c was made and draw thread through, thread over hook and draw through 2 loops. Repeat from * around (12 cross sts). Join last cross st with sl st in 3rd st of ch-5. 3rd and subsequent rnds: Ch 3, * d c in next d c, ch 5, d c in last d c, thread over hook twice, d c in next d c working off 2 loops. Repeat from * around until finger is the length of your forefinger when tried on. It is better not to make fingers too long. Break off.

Middle Finger: Work as for forefinger, making 1 more rnd.

Ring Finger: Like forefinger, but make 2 rnds less.

Little Finger: Work as for forefinger, but making only 10 sps in 1st rnd, and working 5 rnds less.

Thumb: Same as forefinger, up through 11th rnd.

12th and subsequent rows: To shape for section that attaches to palm, work back and forth instead of around, decreasing 1 cross st at both ends of 1st row, and 1 cross st at end of each row thereafter, until 1 cross st remains. (To decrease 1 cross st, on one row omit the last ch-2 and last leg of last cross st; then on the next row omit this incompleted cross st and work cross st over next cross st.)

Palm: Join the four fingers in order with neat stitches between fingers. Work around all four as follows: 1st rnd: Fasten thread to outside of forefinger, ch 3 and work cross st over each cross st around (34 cross sts in all). Join. 2nd to 7th rnds incl: Ch 3, and make cross st over cross st of previous rnd. 8th to 15th rows incl: To make opening for thumb to fit in, work back and forth instead of around. 16th and 17th rows: Work as before, decreasing 1 cross st at end of each row. Try glove on. Sew thumb to opening, adjusting carefully. Hereafter, work in rnds as before. After the 1st rnd, decrease 1 cross st at each side of wrist (30 cross sts in the rnd). Then continue increasing 4 cross sts in each of the 6th, 18th, and 23rd rnds only (to increase, make 2nd leg of cross st in ch-2 loop, complete the cross st, then make the 1st leg of next cross st in same ch-2 loop and the 2nd leg in next d c). Work straight until glove measures 8 inches from wrist, or length desired. Then work a rnd of d c closely together. Join with sl st. Break off.

Right Hand. Same as left hand.

Flowers. Starting at center, with one color ch 10, join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 3, d c in ring, * ch 3, 2 d c in ring. Repeat from * 5 more times, then ch 3, sl st to 3rd st of ch-3 first made. Break off. 2nd rnd: With 2nd color, * ch 3, d c in ch-3 sp, ch 3, sl st in same sp, ch 3, d c in same sp, ch 3, sl st in same sp then sl st in next sp. Repeat from * around. Join. Break off. Make another same as this.

Leaves. With 3rd color ch 12, turn and work d c in 6th ch from hook, * ch 2, skip 2 ch, d c in next ch, repeat from * once more. Do not turn. 1st rnd: 8 s c in 1st loop, 3 s c in ch-2 sp, 11 s c in next loop, 3 s c in ch-2 sp, 3 s c in incompleted loop. Join with sl st. 2nd rnd: Working into each st work as follows: 7 sl sts, 1 s c, 1 half d c, 3 d c, 1 half d c, 1 s c, 1 sl st, 1 s c, 1 half d c, in next st 3 d c. Then, working into each st, work as follows: 1 half d c, 1 s c, 1 sl st, 1 s c, 1 half d c, 3 d c, 1 half d c, 1 s c, 1 sl st. Break off. Make 9 more leaves same as this. Sew flowers and leaves on as in illustration.
