Materials Required: AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "STAR" FAST HEAVY CROCHET MERCERIZED COTTON, Article 140
5 balls Sunshine Yellow.
2 balls each Emerald Green and Red.
1 ball Black or colors of your choice for entire set.
Steel crochet hook No. 1.

Large mat measures 8½ inches x 11¾ inches.
Small mat measures 6¾ inches x 8¾ inches.
Potholder measures 5½ inches x 5½ inches.

Directions are given for potholder. Small and large mats are given in brackets.

With Green ch 34 (54, 70), s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each remaining st of ch, ch 1 to turn all rows.

2nd Row. 1 s c in each s c (right side of work). Repeat 2nd row 4 (8, 10) times.

7th (11th, 13th) Row. 1 s c in each of the next 6 (10, 12) s c, drop Green, attach Yellow (when changing colors always complete last half of last st with next color), 1 s c in each remaining s c.

8th (12th, 14th) Row. 1 s c in each of the next 27 (43, 57) s c, drop Yellow, pick up Green, 1 s c in each of the next
6 (10, 12) s c.

Repeat last 2 rows 2 (4,5) times, always picking up attached thread on all repeat rows.

13th (21st, 25th) Row. 1 s c in each of the next 6 (10, 12) s c, drop Green, working over Yellow thread on this row only, attach Red, 1 s c in each of the next 21 (33, 45) s c, drop Red, pick up Yellow, 1 s c in each of the next 6 (10, 12) sc.

14th (22nd, 26th) Row. 1 s c in each of the next 6 (10, 12) s c, drop Yellow, pick up Red, 1 s c in each of the next 21 (33, 45) s c, drop Red, pick up Green, 1 s c in each of the next 6 (10, 12) s c. Repeat last 2 rows 2 (4, 5) times.

19th (31st, 37th) Row. 1 s c in each of the next 6 (10, 12) s c, drop Green, pick up Bed, 1 s c in each of the next 7 (11, 15) s c, drop Red, attach Green, 1 s c in each of next 14 (22, 30) s c, drop Green, pick up Yellow, 1 s c in each of the next 6 (10, 12) s c.

20th (32nd, 38th) Row. 1 s c in each of the next 6 (10, 12) s c, drop Yellow, pick up Green, 1 s c in each of the next 14 (22, 30) s c, drop Green, pick up Red, 1 s c in each of the next 7 (11, 15) s c, drop Red, pick up Green, 1 s c in each of the next 6 (10, 12) s c. Repeat last 2 rows 2 (4, 5) times.

25th (41st, 49th) Row. 1 s c in each of the next 6 (10, 12) s c, drop Green, pick up Red, 1 s c in each of the next 7 (11, 15) s c, drop Red, working over Green thread on this row only, attach Yellow, 1 s c in each of the next 7 (11, 15) s c, drop Yellow, pick up Green, 1 s c in each of the next 7 (11, 15) s c, drop Green, pick up Yellow, 1 s c in each of the next 6 (10, 12) s c.

26th (42nd, 50th) Row. 1 s c in each of the next 6 (10, 12) s c, drop Yellow, pick up Green, 1 s c in each of the next 7 (11, 15) s c, drop Green, pick up Yellow, 1 s c in each of the next 7 (11, 15) s c, drop Yellow, pick up Red, 1 s c in each of the next 7 (11, 15) s c, drop Red, pick up Green, 1 s c in each of the next 6 (10, 12) s c. Repeat last 2 rows 6 (4, 7) times. Fasten all ends securely. Cut all threads.

EDGE: With Black work a row of s c around each mat and potholder working 3 s c in each corner. On potholder only work a sl st in each s c, join, cut thread. With Black cover a bone ring with s c and sew to potholder as illustrated. Back section for hot plate mats. With Yellow ch 54 (70), s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each remaining st of ch, ch 1 to turn all rows.

2nd Row. 1 s c in each s c. Work 48 (62) rows even, cut thread.

With top section toward you using Black, crochet both sections of each mat together with a row of sl sts picking up the back loop of top section and front loop of back section, cut thread.
