Materials Required: AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "STAR" FAST HEAVY CROCHET MERCERIZED COTTON, Article 140
3 balls Ecru for Hat.
4 balls Ecru for Bag.
6 balls Ecru will make entire set.
1 ball each Forest Green, Flamingo and Chocolate for entire set or colors of your choice.
¾ yd. Grosgrain ribbon.
Steel crochet hook No. 1.

Gauge: 7 s c = 1 inch.

HAT

With Ecru ch 5, join to form a ring, ch 1 and work 8 s c in ring, do not join this or following rounds. Place a marker at beginning of each round.
2nd Round. 2 s c in each s c.
3rd Round. Working through back loop of sts only, * work 1 s c in next s c, 2 s c in next s c, repeat from * all around.
4th Round. Working in s c and back loop of sts only for all rounds except when stated otherwise, increase in every 3rd s c.
5th Round. Increase in every 4th s c.
6th Round. Increase in every 5th s c. Work 1 round even, drop Ecru pulling up loop so it can be picked up later.
8th Round. Attach Forest Green in next st, s c in same space, 1 s c in back loop of each of the next 2 s c, * s c in free front loop of next st of previous round, d c in free loop of corre­sponding st of 2nd round below, s c in free loop of next st of previous round, skip the 3 sts in back of last 3 sts made, 1 s c in back loop of each of the next 3 s c, repeat from * all around ending with s c in free loop of next st of previous round, d c in free loop of corresponding st of 2nd round below, s c in free loop of next st of previous round.
9th Round. 1 s c in each st, join in 1st s e, cut Green.
10th Round. Pick up Ecru and working in s c, increase in every 3rd st, do not join.
11th Round. Increase in every 4th st.
12th Round. Increase in every 5th st. Work 1 round even.
14th Round. Attach Flamingo and work same as 8th round.
15th Round. Same as 9th round, cut Flamingo.
16th Round. Pick up Ecru and working in s c, increase in every 6th s c.
17th Round. Increase in every 4th s c. Work 1 round even.
19th Round. Work even increasing 4 s c evenly spaced (144 s c), drop Ecru.
20th and 21st Rounds. Attach Chocolate and work same as 8th and 9th rounds, cut Chocolate.
22nd Round. Pick up Ecru and working in s c, increase in every 6th st. Work 1 round even.
24th Round. Increase in every 7th s c. Work 1 round even, drop Ecru.
26th and 27th Rounds. Attach Forest Green and work same as 8th and 9th rounds, cut Green.
28th Round. Pick up Ecru and working in s c, increase in every 8th st. Work 1 round even.
30th Round. Increase in every 12th s c. Work 5 rounds even.
36th Round. ** 1 s c in each of the next Use, decrease in next 2 sts (to decrease: * insert hook in next st, pull loop through,
repeat from * once, thread over and work off all loops at one time), repeat from ** all around. Work 1 round even.
Next Round. * 1 s c in each of the next 7 s c, decrease in next 2 sts, repeat from * all around. Work 2 rounds even.
Next Round. * 1 s c in each of the next 6 s c, decrease in next 2 sts, repeat from * all around. Work 2 rounds even.
Next Round. * 1 s c in each of the next 5 s c, decrease in next 2 s c, repeat from * all around. Work 1 round even.
Next Round. * 1 s c in each of the next 4 s c, decrease in next s c, repeat from * all around. Work 2 rounds even, cut thread. Sew ribbon in position for hat band with "STAR" MERCERIZED SEWING THREAD.

BAG

Work 1st 6 rounds same as hat. Continue working in back loop of sts for all rounds except where stated otherwise. Work 1 round even, do not join rounds.
8th Round. Increase in every 4th st. Work 1 round even.
10th Round. Increase in every 5th st.
11th Round. Increase in every 4th st. Work 1 round even.
13th Round. Increase in every 5th st.
14th Round. Increase in every 6th St. Work 2 rounds even.
17th Round. Increase in every 7th st. Work 3 rounds even.
21st Round. Increase in every 12th st, sl st in next st to even round, turn.
22nd Round. Working on wrong side work 1 s c in each st inserting hook around entire st, join in 1st s e, ch 1, turn.
23rd Round. Working in back loop of sts only work 1 s c in each s c, drop Ecru leaving a loop to pick up later.
24th Round. Attach Forest Green and work same as 8th round of hat, join.
25th Round. Same as 9th round of hat, join, cut Green.
26th Round. Pick up Ecru and work 1 s c in each s c, join.
27th, 28th and 29th Rounds. Work even in s c, join each round, drop Ecru.
30th Round. Attach Flamingo and work same as 8th round of hat but having the 3 pattern sts between pattern sts of last pattern stitch round, join.
31st Round. Same as 9th round of hat, cut Flamingo.
Next 4 Rounds. Same as 26th, 27th, 28th and 29th rounds, join each round.
36th and 37th Rounds. Attach Chocolate and work same as 30th and 31st rounds.
38th, 39th, 40th and 4lst Rounds. Same as 26th, 27th, 28th and 29th rounds. Repeat the last 6 rounds working 2 rounds in Forest Green, 4 rounds Ecru, 2 rounds Flamingo, 4 rounds Eeru, 2 rounds Chocolate.
Without joining rounds and working in s c work 7 rounds even in Ecru, sl st in next 2 sts to even round.

Next Round - BEADING: Ch 6, working through both loops of sts, tr tr c (4 times over hook) in next st, * ch 2, skip 2 s c, 1 tr tr c in each of the next 2 s c, repeat from * all around, ch 2, join in 6th st of ch.
Next Round. Ch 1, s c in same space, s c in next tr tr c, * 2 s c over next ch 2 loop, 1 s c in each of the next 2 tr tr c, repeat from * all around ending with 2 s c over next loop, do not join this or following rounds.
Next Round. Working in s c and in back loop of sts, work 1 s c in each s c. Repeat the last round 6 times, cut thread. Attach Forest Green in any s c, s c in same space, 1 s c in back loop of each of the next 2 s c, * s c in free front loop of next st of previous round, 1 s c in each of the next 3 s c, repeat from * all around ending with s c in free front loop of next st of previous round, join, cut thread.

DRAW STRING: With Chocolate, crochet a ch about 30 inches long, cut thread.
Attach Ecru in 1st st of ch and work 1 sl st in each st of ch working through 1 loop only, working around opposite side of ch work 1 sl st in each st, cut thread.
Work another draw string in same manner. Lace through beading, lacing over 2 tr tr c and under next 2 tr tr c starting each string from opposite side. Finish with metal points as illustrated or sew ends together. Cut a cardboard 6½ inches in diameter and insert in bag.
