Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 2/0 (double zero).

GAUGE: 5 sc make 1 inch; 5 rnds make 1 inch.

Starting at center of Crown with Claret, ch 2. 1st rnd: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 2nd rnd: Sc in next sc, drop Claret, attach Mid Rose and, always working over unused color, make sc in same sc, * drop Mid Rose, pick up Claret, sc in next sc, change color, sc in same sc. Repeat from * around, always ending with Mid Rose sc. 3rd rnd: * Change color, 2 sc in next sc (1 sc increased), change color, sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. 4th rnd: * Change color, sc in next 2 sc, change color, 2 sc in next sc. Repeat from * around. 5th rnd: * Change color, sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, change color, sc in next 2 sc. Repeat from * around. 6th rnd: * Change color, sc in next 3 sc, change color, sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc. BRIM TOP ... 1st row: Working with Claret and picking up front loop only, * sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc. Repeat from * to within last 13 stripes. Break off. 2nd row: Picking up front loop of sts on Crown only, attach thread to first sc on stripe preceding last row of Brim, sc in same place, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc, sc in each sc on Brim, sc in next sc of Crown, 2 sc in next sc, sc in next sc. Break off. 3rd to 6th rows incl: Repeat 2nd row, do not break off at end of 6th row. Now work in rnds as follows: 1st rnd: * Sc in front loop of next sc on Crown, 2 sc in front loop of next sc. Repeat from * across remaining sts on Crown, sc in each sc on Brim. 2nd to 8th rnds incl: Sc in each sc around. At end of 8th rnd, join and break off.

BRIM FACING ... With wrong side of Brim facing, attach thread to back loop of sc on last rnd of Crown and work as for Brim Top. Working through both thicknesses, attach Claret to back of Brim and sl st in back loop of each sc around. Join and break off.

CORD ... Cut 12 strands of Claret, each 3 yards long. Twist these strands tightly, then double and twist in the opposite direction. Make a knot 2 inches from each end and loosen strands to form tassel. Trim ends evenly. Tie into a bow around crown of hat.

Press hat through a damp cloth.
