MATERIALS REQUIRED.—3 balls Royal Society Crochet Cotton, color 1010, Ecru, size 3. Crochet hook, No. 4.

First Row.—Ch. 8, join to form ring—2 s. c. into each until 6 s. c. are made.

Second Row.—2 s. c. into each, until 12 s. c. are made.

Third Row.—2 s. c. into each until 24 s. c. are made.

Fourth Row.—1 s. c. into each all round.

Fifth Row.—1 s. c. into first stitch, 2 s. c. into next, 1 s. c. into third, 2 s. c. into fourth, and so on all around until 40 s. c. are made.

Sixth Row.—10 s. c. one into each. Turn. (*) ch. 4, skip 2 s. c., 1 d. c. into next, ch. 2, skip 1, 1 d. c. ch. 2, skip 1, 1 d. c. Turn. 3 s. c. into first hole, 3 s. c. into the next, 3 s. c. into the third. Turn. Ch. 4, skip 2, 1 d. c., ch. 2, skip 2, 1 d. c., ch. 2, skip 2, 1 d. c. Turn. 3 s. c. into first hole, 3 s. c. into next, 3 s. c. into third. Turn. Ch. 4, skip 2, 1 d. c. ch. 2, skip 2, 1 d. c., ch. 2, skip 2, 1 d. c. Turn. 3 s. c. into first hole, 3 s. c. into next, 7 s. c. into third, 3 s. c. into hole at side of square, 3 s. c. into the next, 10 s. c. into the round center. Turn. Repeat from (*) three times. Connect with 2 sl. st. into round center. This forms the 4-square sections around the center.

Seventh Row.—Ch. 17, (**) 10 s. c. into first square section, ch. 8, wind thread 5 times around hook, catch into the round center between the square sections, and work off loops, 2 at a time, ch. 8, and repeat from (**) all round. Ch. 8, sl. st. into ninth ch. of ch. 17.

Eighth Row.—10 s. c. over long ch, 10 s. c. over s. c. of previous row. Continue all around and connect with sl. st.

Ninth Row.—10 s. c. one into each. Turn. (***) 8 s. c. one into each. Turn. 8 s. c. one into each. Turn. 8 s. c. one into each. Turn. 8 s. c. one into each, ch. 1, 4 sl. st. over side of square section just made, 10 s. c. into circle, and repeat from (***) until 12 squares have been made.

Tenth Row.—Ch. 4, 8 s. c. into first square, ch. 4, and repeat all round.

Eleventh Row.—5 s. c, over first ch, 8 s. c. over square, (****) 5 s. c. over ch. 8 s. c. over square, 5 s. c. over ch. 8 s. c., over square, 3 s. c. over ch., ch. 8, catch back into s. c. last made to form loop, 14 s. c. into loop, 2 s. c. into ch., 2 s. c. into s. c. of previous row. Turn. Ch. 4, 1 d c. into first ch. after picot, ch. 4, skip 2, 1 d. c., ch. 4, skip 2, 1 d. c., ch. 4, skip 2, 1 d. c., ch. 4, skip 2, 1 d. c., ch. 4, skip 2, 1 d. c., ch. 4, skip 3 s. c. of circle, 1 sl. st. into next. Turn. 5 s. c. into first hole, ch. 4, form picot, 5 s. c. and picot into each hole around the corner, 2 s. c. into circle. Repeat from (****) for the next two corners. After having made three corners, make 5 s. c. over ch., 8 s. c. over square, 5 s, c. over ch. 8 s. c. over square, 3 sl. st., ch. 8, form loop, and continue like the other corners except making sl. st. instead of s. c. into the square.

Twelfth Row.—Ch. 10, skip 3 s. c. 1 d. tr. c. into next, (*****) ch. 4, skip 4, 1 d. tr. c., ch. 4, skip 4, 1 d. tr. c. ch. 4, skip 4, 1 d. tr. c. ch. 4, skip 3, 1 d. tr. c., 1 d. c. into first picot, ch. 5, 1 s. c. into next picot, ch. 5, 1 d. c. into third picot, ch. 5, 1 tr. c. into the center, ch. 5, 1 d. c. into the fourth picot, ch. 5, 1 s. c. into the fifth picot, ch. 5, 1 d. c. into the sixth picot, skip 4, 1 d. tr. c. into the next, ch. 4, skip 3, 1 d. tr. c. Repeat from (*****) all around.

Thirteenth Row.—5 s. c. over each of the 5 holes, 6 s. c. over each of the next 3 holes, up to the corner, ch. 2, 6 s. c. over the following 3 holes and repeat from beginning of thirteenth, row all around, connect with sl. st.

Fourteenth Row.—Ch. 3, 1 d. c. into each all round. Into corner make 2 d. c. into one, ch. 1, 2 d. c. into the next and continue all round.

This finishes one large square motif. Make another motif the same for the other side. Place motifs together and join with the following picot stitch: Catch into the corner through both motifs, ch. 4, catch back into first ch. to form picot 5 s. c., ch. 4, form picot, 5 s. c. Continue across one side. Repeat this on opposite side. Join bottom together with one row of s. c. Turn. Ch. 4, skip 1 s. c., 1 d. c. ch. 1, skip 1, 1 d. c. Continue across. Turn. 2 s. c. into first hole, 2 s. c. into next, continue across. Turn. Ch. 5, skip 3 s. c., 1 s. c. into next, ch. 5, skip 3, 1 s. c. continue across.

FOR FRINGE

Cut 10 threads 14 inches long, pull through loops, double it and knot. Make a second row of knots by dividing first and second fringe and knotting them together as shown in cut.

(*) 7 s. c. into motif, ch. 15, catch back into tenth ch. to form loop, 2 s. c. into loop, ch. 2, catch into last picot of first loop, ch. 2, catch into s. c. of second loop, 3 s. c. ch. 4, picot, 2 s. c. ch. 4, picot, 2 s. c. ch. 4, picot, 3 s. c. ch. 4, picot, 2 s. c. 5 s. c. over remaining ch. Repeat from (*) all around.

CORD FOR DRAW STRING

Use double thread and Crochet a plain chain very loosely 2½ yds. long. Crochet back with sl. st. into back stitch of chain.
