MATERIALS REQUIRED.—4 balls Royal Society Crochet Cotton, color 1010, Ecru, size 3.

and

PILLOW, No. 5753

MATERIALS REQUIRED.—3 balls Royal Society Crochet Cotton, color 1010, Ecru, size 3.

 

FOR SQUARE MOTIF

First Row.—Ch. 8, skip 4, 3 tr. c., turn.

Second Row.—Ch. 6, skip 4, 3 tr. c., one into each, ch. 2, skip 2, 4 tr. c. (In making this tr. c. wind thread twice around the needle as usual, insert hook into the stitch, pull thread through, wind thread around hook and pull through one loop only thus making a chain. Then work off loops, two at a time. Make three more tr. c. the same way, always inserting hook into the first little chain of the last tr. c.)

These tr. c. are made for widening the square. Turn.

Third Row.—Ch. 6, skip 4, 3 tr. c., ch. 2, skip 2, 1 tr. c., ch. 2, skip 2, 1 tr. c., ch. 2, skip 2, 4 tr. c. (made in the same way as before). Turn.

Fourth Row.—Ch. 6, skip 4, 3 tr. c., ch. 2, 1 tr. c., ch. 2, 1 tr. c., ch. 2, 1 tr. c., ch. 2, 1 tr. c., ch. 2, 4 tr. c. Turn.

Fifth Row.—Ch. 6, skip 4, 3 tr. c., ch. 2, 1 tr. c., ch. 2, 1 tr. c., ch. 2, 1 tr. c., ch. 2, 1 tr. c., ch. 2, 1 tr. c., ch. 2, 1 tr. c., ch. 2, 4 tr. c. Turn.

This forms half of the center square.

Sixth Row.—Ch. 1, sk. 1, 3 sl. st. to first hole, ch. 3, 3 tr. c. into ch. of first hole, ch. 2, 1 tr. c., ch. 2, 1 tr. c., ch. 2, 1 tr. c., ch. 2, 1 tr. c., ch. 2, 4 tr. c. Turn and continue to diminish until square is completed, having 9 rows.

Tenth Row.—Ch. 4, catch with s. c. into first point, ch. 4, catch into second point. Continue all around to starting point, making 5 chains instead of 4 at each corner.

Eleventh Row.—Ch. 4, 11 tr. c., one into each, (*) ch. 10, catch hook into third tr. c. to form loop, 15 s. c. into the loop, 11 tr. c., one into each along the bar up to the point. 2 tr. c. into the chain at point, ch. 1, 2 tr. c. into the same chain, 14 tr. c. around the other side of square and repeat from (*) all around. Finish with sl. st. Turn 5 sl. st. up to point. Turn.

Twelfth Row.—Ch. 7. (**) 3 d. tr. tr. c. (To make d. tr. tr. c. wind thread 4 times over hook, catch into first s. c. of loop. Pull thread through 2 loops at a time until 2 loops are left on the needle. Wind thread 4 times around needle, catch into next s. c. Work off as before until 3 loops are left on the needle. Wind again 4 times around the needle, and work off all the loops, two at a time.) Ch. 6, 3 d. tr. c. (wind thread 3 times around the needle and proceed in the same way as before). Ch. 6 and repeat from (**) until 5 sections are made. Ch. 7, catch with s. c., into point of square and continue around making the other three sides in the same way.

Thirteenth Row.—Ch. 3, 1 d. c. into each chain up to the point of the center section of previous row, 2 d. c. into chain at point, ch. 1, 2 d. c. into the same chain, and repeat all around.

Fourteenth Row.—Ch. 4, catch back into first chain to form picot, 5 s. c., one into each, ch. 4, form picot and so on all around.

FOR BORDER

Make a plain chain the desired width, 1 s. c. into each chain. Turn, ch. 4, catch back into first ch. to form picot, 4 s. c., ch. 4, form picot. Continue across end and repeat the same on other side of chain.

FOR FRINGE

Cut 18 threads 4 inches long, double and wind thread about half inch from top to form tassel and fasten one tassel to each picot of border.
