MATERIALS REQUIRED.—2 balls Royal Society Crochet Cotton, White, size 3. Bone crochet hook. In crocheting the mat insert hook into the back of chain only. These instructions are for mat measuring 13x10 inches. For large sizes increase number of rows.

First Row: Ch. 15, skip 1, 13 s. c., one into each, Ch. 1, 13 s. c. around other side of 1st Ch.

Second Row: Ch. 1, 1 s. c. into s. c. of previous row, Ch. 2, 1 s. c. into the same, Ch. 2, 13 s. c., one into each, Ch. 2, 1 s. c. into next, Ch. 2, 1 s. c. into same, Ch. 2, 13 s. c.

Third Row: Ch. 2, 3 s. c., one into each, Ch. 2, 3 s. c., one into each, Ch. 2, 15 s. c., Ch. 2, 3 s. c., Ch. 2, 3 s. c., Ch. 2, 15 s. c. Repeat 3rd row until 7 rows are made, increasing each row with 2 stitches.

The 7th row when completed has 23 s. c. on side and 11 s. c. up to point.

Eight Row: 1 sl. st. into first stitch, Ch. 4, draw a loop through each of the following 3 stitches, 1 loop through same stitch where first sl. st. was made, 1 loop through next stitch, thread over and draw through the 6 loops on hook. Ch. 1 (*) draw 1 loop through the eye of star just made, draw 1 loop through the back of last loop of star just made, draw 1 loop through same stitch, where last loop of last star was drawn. Draw 1 loop through each of the next 2 stitches, thread over, and draw through all loops on hook, Ch. 1, Repeat from (*) all around.

The 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th rows are made the same way as the 3rd increasing 2 stitches on each row.

Thirteenth Row: The same as 8th row.

14th and 15th rows the same as 3rd.

EDGE

First Row: Ch. 4, 1 d. c. into first stitch, skip 2, 1 d. c. into next, (*) Ch. 1, 1 d. c. into same, skip 2, 1 d. c. into next. Repeat from (*) all around, join.

Second Row: Same as 1st row making d. c. into the center of d. c. of previous row.

Third Row: (**) 2 d. c. into the center of d. c. of previous row, 1 tr. c., 2 d. c. into the same, 1 s. c. into the next, and repeat from (**) all around.
