Headsize 21½

Materials: Clark's O. N. T. or J. & P. Coats Pearl Cotton, size 5, 2 balls each of 3 different colors, a dark, a light, and a medium.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 5.

The hat is made in six individual sections, and then sewed together.

First Section. Starting at lower edge, ch 29 (to measure about 3¾ inches), turn. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch across, ch 1, turn. 2nd row: S c in each s c across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row until piece measures 1¾ inches (16 rows). Ch 1, turn. 17th row: Same as last row, but decreasing 1 s c at both ends (to decrease work off 2 s c as 1 s c). Ch 1, turn. 18th to 23rd rows incl: S c in each s c across. Ch 1, turn. 24th row: S c in each s c, but decreasing 1 s c at both ends. Ch 1, turn.

Work 2 rows straight. Then decrease 1 s c at both ends of next row and every other row thereafter until 4 s c remain. Decrease 1 st at end of each row until all sts are worked off. Break off. Make 2 sections of each color. Sew sections together, joining colors as follows: Light, medium, dark, light, medium, dark.

To trim top of crown, with dark color ch 20, turn. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd to 7th rows incl: S c in each s c across, ch 1, turn. Break off. Roll this piece tightly and sew down the edge, then sew to tip of crown.
