MATERIALS: J. & P. COATS KNIT-CRO-SHEEN, 6 balls of Maroon ... Bone Crochet Hook No. 6 ... ⅓ yard each of buckram and felt for lining ... 2 whale bones, each 12 inches long.

Use 4 threads throughout.

GAUGE: 4 sts make 1 inch; 4 rows make 1 inch.

BAG - Front ••• Starting at top, ch 19. 1st row: 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across, 3 sc in last ch. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in 1st sc, 3 sc in next sc, sc in each sc to center sc of next 3-sc group, 3 sc in center sc, sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn. 3rd to 24th rows incl: (Sc in each sc to center sc of next 3-sc group, 3 sc in center sc) twice; sc in each sc to end of row. Ch 1, turn. Break off at end of 24th row. Turn work (66 sc along lower edge, including the center sc of each 3-sc group). 25th row: Attach thread in center sc of first 3-sc group, Sc in each sc across to center sc of next 3-sc group. Ch 1, turn (66 sc). 26th to 36th rows incl: Sc in next 66 sc. Ch 1, turn. Break off at end of 36th row.

BACK ••• Work exactly the same as Front.

Holding the 2 bag pieces together, attach thread in the 7th sc from upper right hand corner. Working through both thicknesses, thus joining pieces, make sc closely together around to corresponding place on opposite side, making 3 sc in each corner.

TOP (Make 2) ••• Starting at short end, ch 8. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat the 2nd row until piece is long enough to cover whale bone. Break off.

Cover bone with felt and then sew Top over bone. Run a gathering thread along center third at top of Bag and draw up to measure 12 inches. Sew top of Bag to each Top.

HANDLE ••• Starting at short end, ch 7. Work as for Top until piece measures 36 inches. Do not break off. Fold piece in half lengthwise. Working through both thicknesses, make a row of sc across long side. Break off.

RING (Make 4) ••• Starting at center, ch 10. Join. Make 16 sc in ring. Sl st in 1st sc. Break off.

Sew a ring 3 inches in from each side of each whale bone. Draw handle through all loops. Sew short ends of handle together. Line with buckram and lining material.
