Milward's Steel Crochet Hook No. 7.

GAUGE … Each block measures 7¼ inches square before blocking.  For a single size spread, about 70 x 105 inches, make 9 x 14 motifs. For a double size spread, about 90 x 105 inches, make 12 x 14 motifs.

MOTIF … Starting at center, ch 12, join with sl st. 1st rnd: Ch 11 (to count as tr and ch-7), tr where sl st was made, * tr in next 2 ch; in next ch make tr, ch 7 and tr. Repeat from * 2 more times, tr in next 2 ch, sl st in 4th st of ch-11, sl st in next 4 ch of free ch-7. Turn. 2nd rnd: With wrong side of tr's toward you, ch 1, s c (over sl sts) in back loop of next 4 ch, s c in back loop of each tr and ch around. Join and turn. 3rd rnd: Ch 11, tr in back loop of sl st and in back loop of each s c around, making (tr, ch 7 and tr) in back loop of center s c of each 7-s c group at corners. Join with sl st to 4th st of ch-11, sl st in next 4 ch. Repeat 2nd and 3rd rnds alternately 3 more times. Then repeat 2nd rnd once more. 11th rnd: Ch 11, tr in back loop of sl st, ** tr in back of next 3 s c; * now make a cross st as follows: Thread over twice, insert hook in next st and draw loop through; thread over and draw through 2 loops, thread over, skip 2 sts, insert hook in back loop of next st and draw loop through. (Thread over and draw through 2 loops) 4 times; ch 2, d c in center-point of cross, thus completing cross st; tr in back loop of next 4 sts. Repeat from * 4 more times, ch 7, tr in same place as last tr was made. Now repeat from ** around; join. Sl st in next 4 ch.

12th rnd: Same as 2nd rnd. 13th rnd: Ch 11, tr in back loop of sl st, tr in next 3 sts, * cross st over next 4 tr, 4 tr over next cross st. Repeat from * around, making corners as for 11th rnd. Join, sl st in next 4 ch. 14th rnd: Same as 2nd rnd. 15th rnd: Ch 10, tr in back loop of sl st, tr in back loop of next 3 sts, * pc st in back loop of next s c—to make a pc st, ch 1, make 6 d c in same st, drop loop from hook, insert hook in ch-1 preceding the 6 d c and draw dropped loop through. Tr in next 4 sts. Repeat from * around, making ch-6 instead of ch-7 at corners. Join and fasten off. This completes one motif.

Make necessary number of motifs and sew together on wrong side with neat over-and-over stitches. Block to measurements given.

TASSELS … Cut a cardboard 5 inches wide and 7 inches long. Cut 2 strands of thread, each 10 inches long, and place them across length of cardboard. Wind 1 strand of thread 35 times around width. Break off. Pick up both ends of 10-inch strands, and tie securely. Remove cardboard and cut loops at one end. Wind a strand of thread tightly 10 times around tassel strands, ½ inch from top, and fasten securely. Sew a tassel at joining of motifs, on center of side of each motif and at each corner of spread.
