Crocheted Turtle Plant Holder Pattern #677

This pattern contains directions for crocheting a Turtle Plant Holder worked with a double strand of Double Quick (8-cord) Cotton.

MATERIAL REQUIREMENTS
Lily Double Quick (8-Cord) Cotton, 3 skeins
Crochet hook: Size F/5
1 (27-inch length) firm wire required.
Polyester Filler required.

TURTLE HOLDER

BODY - OUTER SECTION - 1ST ROUND: With double strand of thread held together ch 48 loosely, being careful not to twist chain, join with a sl st in first st of ch to form a ring, ch 1, 1 sc in same st as sl st, skip next st of ch, 3 dc (shell) in next st of ch, * skip next st of ch, 1 sc in next st, skip next st of ch, a shell in next st of ch; repeat from * around, end with skip last st of ch, join with a sl st in first sc. There are 12 shells with 1 sc between shells in round.

2ND ROUND: Do not turn in this or following rounds, working with double strand of thread throughout, ch 3, 4 dc in same st as last sl st, 1 sc in center dc of next shell, * 5-dc (shell) in next sc, 1 sc in center dc of next shell; repeat from * around, join with a sl st in top st of ch 3 at beginning of round.

3RD ROUND: Sl st in next dc, ch 1, skip same st as last sl st, 1 sc in next dc, a 5-dc shell in next sc, * 1 sc in center dc of next shell, a 5-dc shell in next sc; repeat from * around, join with a sl st in first sc.

Repeat last 2 rounds (2nd and 3rd rounds) once.

6TH ROUND: Working in front loop of sts only, work (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) all in same st as last sl st, 1 sc in center dc of next shell, * (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) all in next sc, 1 sc in center dc of next shell; repeat from,* around, join with a sl st in top st of ch 3.

7TH ROUND: Working through both loops of sts work a sl st in each st around; cut thread.

UPPER EDGE: Working along foundation ch, join a double strand of thread with an sc in base of any stitch, work (1 sc in base of each sc, 1 sc in base of each shell, 1 sc in each ch 1) around, join with a sl st in first sc; cut thread.

BOTTOM SECTION - 1ST ROUND: With double strand of thread ch 10, 3 sc in second st from hook, 1 sc in each of next 7 sts of ch, 3 sc in last st of ch, working along op­posite side of ch work 1 sc in base of each of next 7 sts; do not join this or following rounds, place a marker at beginning of each round.

2ND ROUND: Do not turn in this or following rounds, * 2 dc in next sc, 3 dc in next sc, 2 dc in next sc, 1 dc in each of next 7 sc; repeat from * once.

3RD ROUND: * Work (2 dc in next dc) 3 times, 3 dc in next dc, (2 dc in next dc) 3 times, 1 dc in each of next 7 dc; repeat from * once.

4TH ROUND: 1 sc in each of next 5 dc, * 2 sc in next dc, 1 sc in next dc, 3 sc in next dc, 1 sc in next dc, 2 sc in next dc, 1 sc in each of next 17 dc; repeat from * once but end with 1 sc in each of last 12 dc. There are 52 sc in last round.

5TH ROUND: 1 sc in each of next 4 sc, * 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next sc, 3 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 15 sc; repeat from * once but end with 1 sc in each of last 11 sc.

6TH ROUND: 1 sc in each of next 8 sc, * 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 3 sc, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next sc, 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in each of next 23 sc; repeat from * once but end with 1 sc in each of last 15 sc, 1 sl st in each of next 2 sc to even round; cut thread.

INNER SECTION - 1ST ROUND: With double strand of thread, ch 4, join with a sl st in first st of ch to form a ring, ch 3, work 15 dc into ring, join with a sl st in top st of ch 3.

There are 16 dc in ring (counting ch 3 as 1 dc).

Note: Ch 3 is always counted as 1 dc.

2ND ROUND: Do not turn in this or following rounds, ch 3, 1 dc in same st as sl st, work 2 dc in each dc around, join with a sl st in top st of ch 3. There are 32 dc in round.

3RD ROUND: Ch 3, 1 dc in same st as last sl st, * 1 dc in next dc, 2 dc in next dc; repeat from * around, end with 1 dc in last dc, join with a sl st in top st of ch 3. There are 48 dc in last round.

4TH THROUGH 6TH ROUND: Ch 3, skip same st as last sl st, 1 dc in each dc around, join with a sl st in top st of ch 3; cut thread.

HIND LEGS - (MAKE 2) - 1ST ROUND: With double strand of thread ch 2, work 5 sc into first st of ch; do not join this or following rounds; place a marker at beg of each round.

2ND ROUND: Do not turn in this or following rounds, work 2 sc in each sc around. There are 10 sc in last round.

3RD THROUGH 7TH ROUND: Work 1 sc in each sc around.

8TH ROUND: 1 sc in each sc around, 1 sl st in each of next 2 sts to even round; cut thread leaving a length for sewing.

LEFT FRONT LEG: Work first 2 rounds same as for Hind Legs.

3RD AND 4TH ROUNDS: Work 1 sc in each sc around.

5TH ROUND: 1 sc in each of next 2 sc, 2 sc in each of next 2 sc, a 2-joined sc over next 2 sc as follows: (pull up a loop in each of next 2 sc, thread over hook and through all 3 loops on hook), work (a 2-joined sc over next 2 sc) twice. There are 9 sc in last round.

6TH ROUND: 1 sc in each of next 6 sc, sl st in each of next 3 sc.

7TH AND 8TH ROUNDS: 1 sc in each of next 6 sc, 1 sl st in each of next 3 sl sts.

9TH ROUND: Work 1 sc in each st around, sl st in next sc to even round; cut thread leaving a length for sewing.

RIGHT FRONT LEG: Work first 2 rounds same as for Hind Legs.

3RD AND 4TH ROUNDS: Work 1 sc in each sc around.

5TH ROUND: Work (a 2-joined sc over next 2 sc) 3 times, 2 sc in each of next 2 sc, 1 sc in each of last 2 sc. There are 9 sc in last round.

6TH ROUND: Sl st in each of first 3 sc, 1 sc in each of next 6 sc.

7TH AND 8TH ROUNDS: Sl st in each of next 3 sl sts, 1 sc in each of remaining 6 sc.

9TH ROUND: 1 sc in each st around, sl st in next sc to even round; cut thread leaving a length for sewing.

HEAD - 1ST ROUND: With double strand of thread ch 2, work 5 sc in first st of ch; do not join this or following rounds, place a marker at beginning of each round.

2ND ROUND: Do not turn in this or following rounds, 2 sc in each sc around. (10 sc)

3RD ROUND: * 2 sc in next sc, 1 sc in next sc; repeat from * around. (15 sc)

4TH THROUGH 8TH ROUND: 1 sc in each sc around.

9TH ROUND: * Work 2-joined sc over next 2 sc, 1 sc in next sc; repeat from * around. There are 10 sc in round.

10TH THROUGH 13TH ROUND: 1 sc in each sc around, 1 sl st in each of next 2 sc to even round; cut thread leaving a length for sewing.

TAIL - (MAKE 2) - 1ST ROW: With double strand of thread ch 2, 1 sc in first st of ch.

2ND ROW: Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in sc of previous row.

3RD ROW: Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in first sc, 1 sc in next sc.

4TH ROW: Ch 1, turn, 2 sc in first sc, 1 sc in each of next 2 sc. (4 sc)

5TH AND 6TH ROWS: Ch 1, turn, 1 sc in each sc across row.

7TH ROW: Ch 1, turn, work (2-joined sc over next 2 sc) twice; cut thread.

FINISHING: Cut 5 (3-inch) lengths of wire; 1 (12-inch) length.

Using a darning needle and matching color thread, place both sections of tail together and sew sections together along edges leaving last row free. Place a 3-inch length of wire into tail and fill slightly with polyester filler; sew opening closed leaving a length for sewing to body.

Place a 3-inch length of wire into each of 4 legs; fill with polyester filler and close opening leaving a length for sewing to body.

Fold 12-inch length of wire in half, place wire into head; fill head with polyester filler and sew opening closed leaving a length for sewing.

With right side of bottom section and wrong side of body outer section facing, pin center of each corner of bottom section to free ch loop of sc between shells at each end on wrong side of upper section having 6 shells on each side.

Sew bottom section to free loop of sts of 6th round of Outer Section.

With right side of Inner section facing, place inner section inside of Body Outer Section and sew both sections together along top edge.

Sew head to edge of corner of Bottom section under shells of 6th round.

Sew tail at opposite end in same manner.

Leaving about 1¼ inches free at each side of head and being careful to have front legs on right side of Turtle, sew legs in position to last round of Bottom section having curved edge at outer edge.

Sew hind legs at each side of tail in same manner.

Using a double strand of black sewing thread, work 2 straight sts for eyes on 3rd round of head leaving about ¾ inch free between eyes.

HANGING CORD - (MAKE 2): With a double strand of thread work a chain 32 inches long.

Sew one chain to top edge on each side of Turtle having one end of chain directly above front legs; opposite end directly above hind legs.
