16TH ROUND: 1 sc in next st, * a 2-joined sc over 2 sts; repeat from * around; break off.

Fold a 32-inch piece of hat wire in half; slip folded wire inside crocheted neck and head; stuff with cotton batting and adjust to correct shape (see Illustration); fold out ends of wire over crochet edge.

BEAK: Using pattern piece as a guide, cut two pieces of red felt for beak; using a darning needle and matching cotton, overcast pieces of felt together allowing short straight edge to remain open. Place open end of beak over last round of head and sew securely in place.

EYES: Sew a small round black button at each side of head (1¼ inches) from beak and 2 inches apart; pushing in sides of head as shown on Detail below.

TO JOIN TO BODY: Using a darning needle and sewing cotton, tack end st of 4th row of body to opposite end st on same row (to form tail). Gather last row of body, sew foundation ring of neck to gathered edge of body. Tack side edges of last 5 rows of body along first few rounds of neck to hold in place.

FOR PLANT HOLDER

HANGING CORDS:

FIRST CORD: Using 3 strands of thread held together, join with a sl st worked over end st of 5th row of Body (next to tail) ch 110, join with 2 sl sts over end st of 5th Body row on opposite side, turn, a sl st in each ch st, a sl st in same st as sl st at beginning of cord; fasten off.

SECOND CORD: Skip next 12 rows of Body, join thread with a sl st over end st of next row, ch 80, join with 2 sl sts over 13th row on opposite side of Body and finish cord in same manner as First Cord.

THIRD CORD: Join thread with a sl st in an sc of 23rd row at back of neck (see Illustration), ch 30, sc over center of first 2 cords (joining all 3 cords - see Illustration), turn, a sl st in each ch st, a sl st in same sc as first st at beginning of cord; fasten off.

STARCHING AND BLOCKING: Use either a sugar solution (2 cups sugar; 1 cup water - boiled), or white glue (which may be obtained at most hardware stores) - melt it and make it of the consistency of starch, or, use a hot solution of starch (following directions given on package).

TO STARCH: Wet crochet first, then dip in the solution. Stretch crochet into correct shape on a flat surface, stuff with rags or paper, place a stick under head to hold up in place. As crochet gets dry, continue to adjust into correct shape stretching outside edges. Allow to dry completely - (it will take from 24 to 48 hours).
