Headsize 21½

Materials:
Chadwick's Red Heart Knitting Worsted, 1 skein (1¼ oz. skein) of main color, and 1 skein of contrasting color for trimming.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 1.
6 snap fasteners.

Crown. Starting at top, with main color ch 5 and join with sl st to form ring. 1st rnd: Ch 3, 15 d c in ring. 2nd rnd: S c in 1st d c, picking up front loop of d c only, * s c in next d c picking up back loop only, s c in next d c, picking up front loop only. Repeat from * around. 3rd rnd: * S c in next s c picking up front loop of next s c, s c in next s c picking up back loop only. Repeat from * around, making an increase in every other s c (to make an increase, make 2 s c in 1 s c). 4th and 5th rnds: Work as for 3rd rnd, but inc. in every 4th s c. 6th rnd: Work in pattern straight. 7th, 8th, and 9th rnds: Inc. in every 5th s c. 10th to 13th rnds incl: Work in pattern straight. 14th rnd: Inc. in every 11th s c. 15th rnd: Work in pattern straight. 16th and 17th rnds: Same as 14th rnd. 18th and 19th rnds: Work in pattern straight. Break off. Attach contrasting color and work 4 rnds in pattern straight. Break off. Attach main color and work in pattern straight until work measures 6 inches from tip of crown. Work a rnd of sl st and break off.

Dots. With contrasting color, ch 3 and work 12 d c in 3rd ch from hook. Join with sl st and break off. Make 6 dots and sew on as in illustration.

Ear-Laps. With contrasting color, make a chain to measure 2 inches long. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch across, making 4 s c in last ch (this is to be curved end). Do not turn, but continue across other side of chain, making s c in each sc. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: S c in each s c as for Crown, making 4 increases around the curved end of tabs only, in order to keep them flat. Break off. Attach main color and repeat 2nd row until piece measures about 2½ inches. Then work without increasing until piece measures 3 inches. Break off. Fasten ear-laps to hat, each with 3 snap fasteners.

To trim tip of crown, with main color make a chain to measure 8 inches long, turn and make a row of d c across. Make 2 loops and sew to tip of crown.

Tie Strings. Work as for tip trimming, making each piece 11 inches long. Sew to Ear-Laps, and tie.
