Directions are given for "STAR" Cotton Yarn and "STAR" Rug Yarn. "AUNT LYDIA" Heavy Rug Yarn is given in parenthesis.
TOP SECTION: With Red ch 25 (21), 2 s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in each of the next 4 (3) sts of ch, skip 2 sts of ch, 1 s c in each of the next 4 (3) sts, 2 s c in each of the next 2 sts, 1 s c in each of the next 4 (3) sts, skip 2 sts of ch, 1 s c in each of the next 4 (3) sts, 2 s c in last st, ch 1 to turn each row.
2nd Row. 1 s c in each s c.
3rd Row. Working in s c, increase 1 s c at beginning and 1 s c at end of row.
4th and 5th Rows. Work even.
6th Row. Same as 3rd row.
7th Row. Work even.
8th Row. Increase 1 s c at beginning and end of row, then work 9 (4) rows even.
18th (13th) Row. Decrease 1 s c at beginning and end of row (to decrease: * insert hook in next st, pull loop through, repeat from *, yarn over and pull through all 3 loops at one time).
19th (14th) Row. Work even.
20th (15th) Row. Same as 18th (13th) row. Work 2 rows even.
Next 2 Rows. Decrease 1 s c at beginning and end of each row.
25th (20th) Row. Work even.
26th (21st) Row. Same as 19th (14th) row.
27th (22nd) Row. Decrease in 1st 2 s c, 1 s c in each of the next 6 (4) s c, decrease in next 2 sts, ch 1, turn.
28th (23rd) Row. Decrease 1 s c, 1 s c in each of the next 4 (2) s c, sl st in each of the next 2 sts, break yarn. Attach yarn in 1st s c on opposite side of 26th (21st) row and working towards the center, repeat 27th (22nd) and 28th (23rd) rows, break yarn.
UNDER SECTION: Work 1st 19 (14) rows same as top section. 20th (15th) Row. Decrease in 1st 2 s c, 1 s c in each of the next 4 s c, ch 7 (6), skip 7 (6) s c for thumb opening, 1 s c in each remaining s c decreasing in last 2 s c.
21st (16th) Row. 1 s c in each s c working 1 s c in each st of ch. Work remaining rows same as front section.
THUMB: With Red follow directions given for thumb on pattern page.
With Red crochet the 2 sections together with s c leaving upper edge open for hand but working s c on each section of opening, break yarn.
LEAF: With 12 strands of Green "STAR" Six Strand Embroidery Cotton, ch 21, 1 s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in next st of ch, 1 s d c in each of the next 3 sts of ch (s d c: thread over hook, insert in st, pull through, thread over and pull through all loops at one time), 1 d c in each of the next 3 sts of ch, 1 tr c in each of the next 5 sts of ch, 1 d c in each of the next 3 sts of ch, 1 s d c in each of the next 2 sts of ch, 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts of ch, ch 1 and working on other side of ch, 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts, 1 s d c in each of the next 3 sts, 1 d c in each of the next 2 sts, 1 tr c in each of the next 4 sts, 1 d c in each of the next 2 sts, 1 s d c in each of the next 3 sts, 1 s c in each remaining st.
Next Row. Working around entire leaf, work 1 s c in each s c, 1 s d c in each s d c and 1 tr c in each tr c working 3 s c at point, break thread. Work another leaf in same manner and sew to top of holder as illustrated.
STEM: With Brown using 12 strands, ch 31 and work 30 s c on ch, break thread. Sew to top as illustrated. Using 12 strands of Brown ch 10, s c in 2nd st from hook, 1 s c in next st of ch, 1 s d c in each of the next 5 sts of ch, 1 s c in each of the next 2 sts of ch, break thread and sew to lower edge of top section.
With Yellow using 12 strands, embroider 3 lines on right hand side about 1 ½ inches long and 2 lines on left hand side about 3 ½ inches long using an outline st.
