Elephant Applique Pattern #8590
These delightful animal appliques are designed for wash cloth pockets. They’re also amusing on scrap baskets, lamp shades, or curtains.
Materials: Clark’s O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Pearl Cotton, size 5, 2 balls of any color.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 7 or 8.
GAUGE: 9 sts make 1 inch; 9 rows make 1 inch.
Starting at top of back ch 35 (9 ch sts to 1 inch). 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch across (34 sts). Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: 2 s c in each of 2 sts (2 s c increased), s c in each st across to within last 2 sts, 2 s c in each of 2 sts (2 more s c increased—38 s c). Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row until there are 54 sts in the row. Next row: S c in each st across, increasing 1 s c in 1st and last sts (56 s c). Ch 1, turn. Following row: S c in each st across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat last 2 rows alternately until there are 70 sts in row. Work straight for 1¾ inches. Next row: (Beginning of this row is tail end). Work across 54 sts. Ch 1, turn (trunk end). Work over these 54 sts only, decreasing 1 st at tail end every row until there are 47 sts—to dec., work off 2 s c as 1 st. Starting at tail end, work across 18 sts. Ch 1, turn. Work over these 18 sts only for 2 inches (back leg). Fasten off. Attach thread in 11th st away from start of back leg, s c in each of remaining 18 sts. Ch 1, turn. Work over these 18 sts for 2 inches (front leg). Attach thread to base of front leg (trunk end), work across remaining 16 sts. Ch 1, turn. Hereafter inc. 1 st at outer edge every other row 9 times; at the same time, dec. 1 st at inner edge every row 24 times. Fasten off.
Ear. Begin at sewing edge. Ch 31. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch across. 2nd row: Inc. 1 st, work across to within last st, dec. 1 st. 3rd row: Dec. 1 st, work across to within last st, inc. 1 st. Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately 2 more times. Continue decreasing 1 st on each row on decreased edge, but keep increased edge straight until there are 22 sts. Now dec. 1 st at both ends of each row until 10 sts remain. Fasten off.
Sew on ear, and embroider eye and tusk in satin stitch. For tail, braid 12 short lengths of thread for 2 inches. Knot and trim ends. Sew on tail.
