Shell Stitch Set Pattern

Size: Infants

REQUIREMENTS:                      

YARN: 5-ounces of 3-ply Baby Yarn
CROCHET HOOK: #3 Bone hook

PATTERN: FOUNDATION ROW: Ch 3, 3 d c in first st, * ch 2, skip 2 sts, 1 s c in next st, skip 2 sts, 3 d c in next st; repeat from * across, ending with 4 d c in last st. ROW 1: * s c in center d c group, ch 2, 3 d c in s c, ch 2, repeat from * across row; ch 3, turn. ROW 2: * 3 d c in s c, ch 2, s c in center d c group, ch 2, repeat from * across row; ending with 4 d c in last s c. Repeat row 1 and 2 for the pattern.

SWEATER-BACK YOKE: Chain 51 sts; 1 d c in 3rd ch from hook; 1 d c in each remaining ch, (49 sts in all). 2nd row: Ch 3, turn; 1 d c in each st across row. (Note: The ch 3, counts as a st). Repeat 2nd row until 9 rows have been made in all. FRONT: Work in d c over 15 sts; increas­ing 1 st at neck edge every row for 9 rows. Break yarn. 2nd front: Tie yarn in the 15th st from edge, (the sts omitted are for the back of neck), work to correspond to the first side. Break yarn. At the underarm edge of front, tie yarn in, ch 8, join with a slip st to back. Break yarn. Join the other under­arm the same way. BODY PART: Tie yarn at front edge. Work across front, back and 2nd front in the pattern. Work back and forth until the piece measures 6 inches from yoke Break yarn. SLEEVES: Tie yarn at the center of underarm chain and start the pattern as on the body part, having 8 shells around the armhole. Work back and forth in the pattern until the sleeve measures 5½-inches from yoke. Break yarn. Sew underarm seams. Make the 2nd sleeve the same way.

BONNET: Starting at the center back; Chain 3 sts, join with a slip st to form a ring. Make 6 s c into ring. (Mark the begin­ning of the round with a colored thread as an aid in counting). 2nd round: 2 s c in each st around. 3rd round: 1 s c in next st, 2 s c in next st, repeat around once. 4th round: 1 s c in next 2 sts; 2 s c in next st, repeat around once. Keep increasing 6 sts on a round, having 1 more st between each increase until you have 12 sts between increases, (84 sts in all). End round with a slip st. Now start the pattern as on the body of the sweater. Work over 68 sts, leaving 16 sts for the back of the neck. Work back and forth until the piece measures 4 inches from last s c row. Break yarn. NECK BAND: Starting at the front edge, make 3 s c over each shell along front, 1 s c in each st across back, 3 s c over each shell on 2nd front. Ch 1, turn; make 3 rows more of s c, st for st. Break yarn. Trim with ribbon.

BOOTIES: Instep and Sole: Chain 10 sts, turn 1 s c in 2nd ch from hook and in each of next 8 sts. Ch 1, turn. Work in s c, st for st for 8 rows more. Chain 30 sts, join with a slip st to corner; 9 s c along side of instep, 9 s c across toe, 9 s c along 2nd side of instep; 1 s c in each chain. Work around in s c for 8 more rows. Break yarn. Sew sole part. TOP PART: Tie yarn at the center of the chain and start the pattern having 7-shell patterns around. Work back and forth until the piece measures 3 inches, break yarn leaving 8-inches. Sew up back. Make the other bootie the same way.
