Arrowhead Bedspread Pattern #611

MATERIALS:
I Milward's steel crochet hook No. 6 or 7
Choose one of the following threads:
J. & P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen (approx. 68 balls)
Clark's O.N.T. Lustersheen (approx. 51 skeins)
Clark's O.N.T. Knitting and Crochet Cotton (approx. 51 balls)

This amount is sufficient for a double size spread in White or Ecru. Color requires about one-third more.

Gauge: Each block measures about 11 inches square and requires about 235 yards of thread. For a double size spread (about 101 x 112 inches), or a single size spread (about 99 x 112 inches), make the necessary amount of blocks and then join them together to correspond with measurement.

Block. Begin with ch 24, turn. 1st row: 1 d c in 4th ch from hook (the turning ch-3 counts as 1 d c) make 1 d c in each of next 2 sts (1 block completed); * ch 2, skip 2 sts, 1 d c in next (1 space completed); 1 d c in each of next 3 sts (another block), and repeat from * ending row with 1 block. Ch 5, turn. 2nd row: Make 7 sps, ch 3, turn. 3rd row: (Turning ch-3 counts as 1 d c), * 2 d c under ch-2, 1 d c in next d c (1 block), ch 2, skip ch-2, d c in next d c (1 space) repeat from * ending row with 1 bl. Ch 5, turn. 4th to 7th rows incl: Repeat 2nd and 3rd rows. The 7th row completes the center square. After 7th row is completed work around the square as follows:—1st rnd: Ch 8, d c in last d c of 7th row (a corner), ch 2, d c in middle st of turning ch-5 after 5th row, ch 2, d c in last d c of 5th row, ch 2, d c in middle st of turning ch-5 after 3rd row, ch 2, d c in last d c of 3rd row, ch 2, d c in middle st of turning ch-5 after 1st row, ch 2, d c in last d c of 1st row, ch 2, d c in 1st st of foundation ch, ch 5, d c in same st as last d c was made (another corner), make 7 sps on other side of foundation ch (making last d c in same st in which first d c of 1st row was made), ch 5, d c in same place (third corner), make 7 sps along next side with 1 sl st in 3rd st of turning ch-8 (4th corner).

2nd rnd: Ch 3 (to count as 1 d c), 1 d c in next st of ch 8, d c in next 2 sts, ch 5, 2 d c in same st as last d c, d c in next st, d c in next d c, * ch 2, skip ch-2, d c in next d c, 2 d c under ch-2, d c in next d c, repeat from * twice more, ch 2, skip ch-2, d c in next d c, d c in each of next 3 ch sts, ch 5, d c in same ch as last d c, d c in each of next 2 ch sts, d c in next d c (2nd corner turned). Continue making alternately 1 sp and 1 bl all around, joining the last ch-2 to 3rd st of starting ch-3. Sl st to middle st of corner ch-5. 3rd rnd: Ch 8, d c in same st as last sl st, 1 d c under remaining ch, 1 d c in each of next 4 d c, 1 d c under next ch-2, 1 d c in each of next 4 d c, 1 d c under ch- 2, d c in next d c, ch 2, d c in last d c of same bl, and continue around having on each side 2 groups of 13-d c with a ch-2 sp between groups, and ch-5 at each corner. For the last group make only 12 d c, then join with sl st to 3rd st of starting ch-8 (the ch-3 base of this sl st forms the 13th d c to complete the group). Sl st in next 3 ch sts.

4th to 9th rnds incl: Work same as for 3rd rnd, increasing 2 d c in each group for each rnd, until there are 25 d c in each group in the 9th rnd. 10th rnd: Start same as 4th rnd, working d c in d c to within 3 d c from end of first group, then ch 2, skip 2 d c, d c in last d c of group, 2 d c under ch-2, d c in 1st d c of next group, ch 2, skip 2 d c, d c in each d c to end of group, turn corner as in previous rnds, and make other sides to correspond, joining last d c to 3rd st of starting ch-8. Sl st in next 3 ch sts. 11th rnd: Start same as 10th rnd, working d c's to within 3 d c from end of first group of 10th rnd, then ch 2, skip 2 d c, 1 d c in last d c of group, 2 d c under ch-2, 1 d c in each of next 4 d c, 2 d c under next ch-2, 1 d c in 1st d c of next group, ch 2, skip 2 d c, d c in each d c of group of previous rnd, turning corner as before, and then make other sides to correspond. Join with sl st as before.

12th rnd: Ch 8, make 3 d c under corner ch of previous rnd, 1 d c in 1st d c of group, ch 2, skip 2 d c, 1 d c in each d c of previous rnd to within 2 d c from end of first group, ch 2, skip 2 d c, 1 d c in last d c of group, 2 d c under ch-2, 1 d c in next d c, ch 2, skip 2 d c, 1 d c in each of next 4 d c, ch 2, skip 2 d c, 1 d c in next d c, 2 d c under ch-2, 1 d c in 1st d c of next group, ch 2, skip 2 d c, and continue to within 3 d c of end of 2nd group, then ch 2, skip 2 d c, 1 d c in last d c, 3 d c under ch-5, ch 5, 3 d c under same ch-5 (corner), 1 d c in 1st d c of following group, and continue around to correspond, ending with 1 d c in last d c of last group, 2 d c under same ch as the first 3 d c in this rnd, then join with sl st to 3rd ch of ch-8 and sl st in 3 sts. 13th rnd: Ch 8, d c in same place as last sl st, ch 2, 1 d c in 1st d c of previous row, ch 2, skip 2 d c, 1 d c in next, ch 2, skip ch-2, 1 d c in each of next 16 d c (to within 2 d c from end of first group), then make 1 sp, 1 bl, 1 sp, 1 bl, 1 sp, 1 bl, 1 sp, 1 bl, 1 sp (thus having alternated 5 sps and 4 bls), then d c in each d c, 3 sps, ch 5, d c in same place as last d c (corner) and continue around to correspond, joining last ch-2 to 3rd ch of starting ch-8. Sl st 3 sts. 14th rnd: Same as 13th rnd, having an additional sp on either side of each corner, and alternating 6 sps and 5 bls. There should be 14 d c in each d c group in this rnd. Join as before.

15th to 19th rnds incl: Same as 14th rnd. In 19th rnd there will be 9 sps on either side of the corner ch-5's and there will be alternated 11 sps and 10 bls, and only 4 d c will remain in each d c group. 20th rnd: Ch 4, d c in same st as last sl st, 2 d c under corner ch, then make 1 d c in each d c and 2 d c under each ch-2 all around, in corner ch-5's making 3 d c, ch 1, 3 d c. Join with sl st to 3rd st of starting ch-4. Last rnd: S c under corner ch, ch 5, s c in same place, s c in each of next 3 sts, skip 1 st, in next st work: 1 s c, ch 3, 1 s c. * Skip 1 st, 1 s c in each of next 3 sts, skip 1 st, in next st work 1 sc, ch 3, 1 sc. Repeat from * around making in corners ch-5 between 2 s c. Join with sl st to first s c. This completes one block. The blocks are joined as the last rnd of each is worked. When making the ch-3 picots, remove hook from st after ch-3 is made, insert hook under corresponding ch-3 of next block, put st on hook again and pull through. After all blocks have been made and joined make border as follows: Border: Attach thread in a corner ch-5, and make under this ch-5: 3 s c, ch 1, 3 s c, then * ch 4, s c under next ch-3 p, repeat from * till next corner. In corner ch-5 make 3 s c, ch 1, 3 s c. Continue all around spread, joining last ch 4 to first s c with sl st. Sl st up to ch-1 at corner.

2nd rnd: Ch 3 (to count as 1 d c), 2 d c under ch-1, ** 1 d c in each of next 3 s c, * 4 d c under ch-4, 1 d c in s c, repeat from * till next corner, then work 1 d c in each of next 3 s c, 3 d c under ch-1, and repeat from ** all around, joining last d c to 3rd ch of starting ch-3 with sl st. Sl st in next d c, to bring work directly over a corner. 3rd rnd: Ch 8, d c in same st as last sl st (corner sp), then alternate 1 sp and 1 bl till next corner (ending with a sp), then make another corner sp, and continue all around joining last ch-2 to 3rd st of starting ch-8. Sl st 3 sts. 4th to 8th rnds incl: Same as 3rd rnd. The sps increased at corners will make bls come over sps, and sps over bls. 9th rnd: Make 1 d c in each st and 10 d c under corner chs. 10th rnd: Same as last rnd of block.

Fringe: The netting before the fringe may be either knotted (as in illustration) or the same effect may be had by working 3 rows of knot sts on each side as follows:—Attach thread at a corner, make 1 knot st (to make a knot st, draw loop on hook out ¼ inch, draw thread through, making a ch st of it, put hook between loop and single thread of this ch and make a s c). Make another knot st, skip 3 d c, s c in next d c. * Make 2 knot sts, skip 3 d c, s c in next d c, repeat from * till next corner, turn. Next 2 rows: Make a 2⅜ inch knot st (larger knot sts are needed for turning allowance), * s c over double loop at right of 1st center knot of preceding row, 1 s c over loop at left of same knot, 2 knot sts and repeat from * to end of row. Make a fringe between each pair of knot sts all around.

To Make a Fringe: Cut 4 strands, each 10 inches long. Double these strands forming a loop. Pull loop through sp on motif and draw loose ends of fringe through this loop. Pull tight. When fringe has been worked along edge, trim evenly.
