MATERIALS:
Use these appliques on bath towels as a wash cloth pocket. Use Pearl Cotton in size 5.
Starting at bottom of basket, ch 29. 1st row: 4 tr in 5th ch from hook, holding back the last loop of each tr on hook; thread over and draw through all loops on hook (a cluster). Tr in each ch across to within last ch, a 5-tr cluster in last st. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: D c in tip of cluster, drawing thread through last 2 loops on hook, * ch 2, skip 2 sts; 2 d c in next st, holding back the last loop of each d c on hook; thread over and draw through all loops on hook (a d c-cluster). Repeat from * across. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: * 2 d c in sp, d c in tip of cluster. Repeat from * across. Ch 4, turn. 4th row: 2 tr in 1st d c, holding back the last loop of each tr on hook; thread over and draw through all loops on hook (a cluster). * Ch 2, skip 2 sts; 3 tr in next st, holding back the last loop of each tr on hook; complete cluster as before. Repeat from * across. Ch 4, turn. 5th to 8th rows incl: 2 tr in tip of 1st cluster, holding back the last loop of each tr on hook; complete cluster as before. * Ch 3, cluster in tip of next cluster. Repeat from * across. Ch 4, turn. 9th and 10th rows: Same as 8th row, making 3 clusters with ch-3 between in tip of each end cluster. Ch 4, turn. 11th row: 5 d c in each sp across, d c in tip of last cluster. Fasten off.
ROSETTES (Make 5) … Starting at center, ch 5, join with sl st. 1st rnd: * Ch 5, s c in ring. Repeat from * 4 more times. 2nd rnd: In each loop make s c, half d c, 5 d c, half d c, s c (5 petals); s c in next s c. 3rd rnd: * Ch 5, s c in s c of 1st row, at base of next 2 petals. Repeat from * 4 more times. 4th rnd: Same as 2nd rnd. Fasten off.
LEAVES (Make 3) … Starting at center, ch 10. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook and in each across to within last ch; in last ch make s c, ch 2 and s c. S c in each st on opposite side of foundation ch to within last 2 sts. Ch 1, turn. Hereafter pick up only the back loop of each s c. 2nd row: S c in each s c to within ch-2; in ch-2 make s c, ch 2 and s c; s c in each s c to within last 2 sts. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row 4 more times. 7th row: Work as for 2nd row to within ch-2, s c in ch-2. Fasten off, leaving a 6-inch length of thread for sewing leaf in place.
HANDLE … 1st row: Ch 6, d c in 4th ch from hook and in each of next 2 ch. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: D c in next 2 d c, d c in top st of turning ch. Ch 3, turn. Repeat 2nd row for 8 inches. Fasten off. Sew rosettes, leaves and handle to basket as in illustration.
