MATERIALS:

CLARK'S O.N.T. or J. & P. COATS BEST SIX CORD MERCERIZED CROCHET, size 50:

Clark's O.N.T.—3 balls of White or Ecru, or 4 balls of any color,
OR
J. & P. Coats —2 balls of White or Ecru, or 3 balls of any color.

Steel crochet hook No. 12.

15 small pearl buttons.

CENTER BAND ... Starting at one end, make a chain to measure 1½ inches. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across until row measures 1 inch. Ch 1, turn. Cut off remaining ch. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat the 2nd row until piece measures 8¾ inches.

TOP FRILL ... Work along 1 long side of Center Band as follows: 1st row: * Ch 7, skip 1 row, sc in end of next row. Repeat from * across to end of long side (bottom). Work ch-7 loops in same way in every other st of starting chain across bottom. Work along 2nd long side to correspond, ending with ch 3, tr in end of last row. Turn. 2nd row: * Ch 8, sc in next loop. Repeat from * across 2 long sides and 1 short side, ending with ch 4, tr in last loop. Turn. 3rd row: * Ch 9, sc in next loop. Repeat from * across, ending with ch 4, d tr in last loop. Turn. 4th row: Ch 4, then holding back the last loop of each tr on hook, make 2 tr in top of d tr, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (cluster made). Ch 11, then holding back the last loop of each tr on hook, make 3 tr in same place, and complete a cluster as before. * In 5th st of next ch-9 make two 3-tr clusters with ch-11 between. Repeat from * across. Turn. 5th row: Sl st to center of next loop, ch 4 and complete a cluster as before at the base of the ch-4. Ch 14, cluster in same place as last cluster. * In 6th st of next ch-11 make two 3-tr clusters with ch-14 between. Repeat from * across. Turn. 6th row: * 4 sc in next loop, ch 3, sc in 3rd ch from hook (picot made); (3 sc in same loop, p) twice; 4 sc in same loop. Repeat from * across. Fasten off.

BOTTOM FRILL ... Working in back of Top Frill, attach thread to end of 1st free row (from top) at one long side of Center Band. 1st row: Work same as 1st row of Top Frill, making the sc's in ends of free rows of Center Band. 2nd and 3rd rows: Same as 2nd row of Top Frill. 4th and 5th rows: Same as 3rd row of Top Frill. 6th, 7th and 8th rows: Same as 4th, 5th and 6th rows of Top Frill. Fasten off. Starch lightly and press. Sew on buttons, as in illus­tration (5 groups of 3).
