BODY ... Starting at tip of tail, ch 4. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across. Ch 1, turn (this is tail end - place a marker). 2nd row: Sc in next sc, pc st in next sc - to make a pc st, make 5 dc in next sc, remove hook, insert hook in 1st dc, draw dropped loop through and pull up tight. Sc in next sc. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: Sc in next sc, pc st in next sc, sc in next sc. Ch 40, turn. 5th row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. 8th row: Sc in 1st sc, * pc st in next sc, sc in each of next 5 sc. Repeat from * across, 2 sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn.

The last 4 rows constitute pattern. Pc sts always fall between those of previous pc st row. Keep in pattern when increasing. Now inc 1 sc at front end on each of next 9 rows, but when piece measures 3 inches from tip of tail, dec 1 sc at tail end each row 7 times in all -  to dec 1 sc, work off 2 sc as 1 sc. Then dec 2 sc at tail end each row twice - to dec 2 sc, work off 2 sc as 1 sc twice.

At the Same Time

Inc 1 sc at front end every other row 3 times in all. Work until piece measures 4½ inches from tip of tail, ending at front end. (Place a marker 6 sts in from front end - all sts from marker to front end are worked in sc for face, remaining sts are worked in pattern.) Ch 5, turn. Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each st across until 18 sts are made. Ch 1, turn. (This is last row of Body - mark with a safety pin.)

Work in pattern, increasing 1 sc at front end only each row 3 times in all. Work straight for ½ inch. Dec 1 sc at front end each row 6 times in all. Work straight until piece measures 2¼ inches from pin mark. Now dec 1 sc at both ends of each row 3 times in all. Break off.

Make another piece like this, reversing all shapings.

GUSSET FOR HEAD ... Starting at chin, ch 2. 1st row: 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat the 2nd row until piece measures 3½ inches in all. Next row: Sc in next sc, pc st in next sc, sc in next sc. Ch 1, turn. Following row: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat the last 2 rows once more. Dec 2 sc on next row. Break off. Sew Gusset between Head pieces, placing starting chain at chin and remainder of Gusset over top and down back of Head. Sew top of Body neatly together.

GUSSET FOR BODY ... Ch 2. 1st row: 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: 2 sc in 1st sc, sc in next sc, 2 sc in last sc.
