MATERIALS: J. & P. COATS KNIT-CRO-SHEEN, 2 balls of White and 1 ball of Black.
J. & P. Coats or Clark's O.N.T. Six Strand Embroidery Floss, 1 skein of Indian Pink.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 4.
1 yard of ribbon. Cotton batting.
4 pencils, 5 ½ inches long.

GAUGE: 6 sts make 1 inch; 6 rows make 1 inch.
Use a double thread throughout.

TAIL ... Starting at tip, with White ch 2. 1st row: 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: 2 sc in next 2 sc. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: 2 sc in next sc (an inc), sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn. Work without increasing until piece measures 1 inch. Break off.

BODY ... 1st row:  With White ch 27, sc in each of the 6 sc on last row of Tail. Ch 28, turn. 2nd row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each st across (60 sc). Ch 1, turn (wrong side). 3rd row: Make a loop st in each of the next 21 sc - to make a loop st, with ring finger of right hand draw the thread on left hand out to form a loop ¾ inch long; holding finger in ¾ inch loop, insert hook in next sc and make an sc, remove finger. Sc in each of next 18 sc, make a loop st in each of next 21 sc. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat the last 2 rows until piece measures 8 inches from tip of Tail, ending with the 4th row.

To Shape Neck ... 1st row: Make a loop st in each of the next 21 sc, sc in each of the next 9 sc. Ch 1, turn. Work over these 30 sts only, decreasing 1 st at both ends of each loop st row 4 times in all. Break off. Attach thread to base of piece just worked and work other half to correspond.

BODY GUSSET ... With White, ch 2. 1st row: 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Ch 1, turn. Inc 1 sc at both ends of each row until there are 6 sc on row. Work straight until piece measures 14 inches in all. Now dec 1 sc at both ends of each row until all sts are worked off. Break off.

Sew Gusset from tip of Tail under the Body to base of neck, leaving an opening for each Leg and one for stuffing. Stuff Body very firmly and sew up opening.

NECK ... With White, ch 18. Join. 1st rnd: Sc in each ch around. 2nd rnd: Sc in each sc around. Repeat the 2nd rnd until piece measures 1½ inches in all. Ch 1, turn. Work back and forth in rows instead of rnds, decreasing 1 sc at end of each row until piece measures 2¼ inches in all. Break off. Sew starting chain to neck opening, having the longest part of Neck on top.

HEAD (Make 2) ... Starting at chin, with White ch 5. 1st row: Make a loop st in 2nd ch from hook, make a loop st in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: 2 sc in 1st sc, sc in each st across, 2 sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Make a loop st in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Now work only in sc. Inc 1 sc at both ends of the next row and every 4th row thereafter until there are 14 sc on row. Work straight until piece measures 2¾ inches in all. Next row: Sc in each of next 6 sc. Ch 1, turn. Work over this set of sts only, decreasing 1 sc at both ends of each row until all sts are worked off. Break off. Skip 2 sc at base of piece just made, attach thread to next sc and work over remaining 6 sc to correspond.

HEAD GUSSET ... With White ch 5. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat the 2nd row until piece is long enough to go around Head. Break off. Sew Gusset between the 2 pieces of Head, leaving an opening for stuffing. Stuff very firmly and sew up opening.

EAR (Make 2 White and 2 Pink) ... Ch 6. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. Inc 1 sc at both ends of each of next 2 rows. Work 1 row straight. Then dec 1 sc at both ends of each of next 2 rows. Break off.

Sew a Pink Ear and a White Ear neatly together and sew to Head.

HORN (Make 2) ... With Black, ch 3. Join. 1st rnd: 4 sc in ring. 2nd rnd: Sc in each sc around. Repeat the 2nd rnd until piece measures ¾ inch. Break off. Stuff firmly and sew to Head. With Black, embroider eyes in satin stitch. With a scrap of red, embroider nostrils in satin stitch. Sew Head to neck.

LEG (Make 4) ... With White ch 10. Join. 1st rnd: Sc in each ch around. 2nd rnd: Sc in each sc around. Re­peat the 2nd rnd until piece measures 2 inches in all. Break off.

Wind sufficient cotton around a pencil to, stuff Leg. Insert into Leg. With Black, ch 2. 1st rnd: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 2nd rnd: 2 sc in each sc around. 3rd and 4th rnds: Sc in each sc around. Break off. Sew to bottom of Leg. Insert Leg into opening and sew Body around Leg. Finish other Legs in the same way.

Place ribbon around William's neck and tie ends into a bow.
