MATERIALS: J. & P. COATS KNIT-CRO-SHEEN,  balls of Beige.
J. & P. Coats or Clark's O.N.T. Six Strand Embroidery
Floss, 1 skein each of Black, Red and Indian Pink.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 4.
½ yard of ribbon.
Cotton batting.
4 pencils each 7½ inches long.

GAUGE: 6 sc make 1 inch; 6 rows make 1 inch.
Use a double thread throughout.

BODY (Make 2) ... Starting at lower edge with Beige, ch 37. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn (this is tail end - place a marker) . 2nd row: 2 sc in 1st sc (an inc), sc in each sc across, 2 sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn. Now inc 1 sc at both ends of next 4 rows. Inc 1 sc at front end only 8 more times. Work straight until piece measures 3 inches in all, ending at front end. Dec 1 sc at tail end only on next row and every other row thereafter until 5 sts have been decreased at this edge. Now dec 1 sc at tail end on each of the next 2 rows. Dec 2 sc at tail end, sc in each of next 5 sc. Ch 1, turn. Dec 1 sc, sc in each of next 3 sc - to dec 2 sc, work off 2 sc as 1 sc twice; to dec 1 sc, work off 2 sc as 1 sc. Break off. Skip 12 sc at base of piece just made. Attach thread to next sc and make sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Keeping front edge straight, dec 1 sc at inner edge every other row until 24 sc rows are made over this set of sc. Then dec 1 sc at same edge each row until 4 sc remain. Break off.

Sew Body neatly together from top of neck to tail end.

GUSSET ... With Beige, ch 3. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch. Ch 1, turn. Now inc 1 sc at both ends of each row until there are 6 sc on row. Work straight until piece reaches from Tail end to ¼ inch from top of neck. Then dec 1 sc at both ends of next 2 rows. Break off.

Sew Gusset in place, leaving openings for Legs.

LEG (Make 4) ... With Beige, ch 10. Join. 1st rnd: Sc in each ch around. 2nd rnd: Sc in each sc around. Re­peat the 2nd rnd until Leg measures 5½ inches. Break off.

Wind enough cotton batting around a pencil to stuff Leg. Stuff and insert it into opening and sew opening all around Leg.

HOOF (Make 8) ... With Black, ch 2. 1st rnd: 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 2nd rnd: 2 sc in each sc around. 3rd and 4th rnds: Sc in each sc around. Break off.

Cut a piece of cardboard the size of Hoof, place it between 2 Hoofs and sew edges neatly together. Sew to bottom of Leg. Finish other Legs in the same way. Stuff Body very firmly.

HEAD (Make 2) ... With Beige, ch 4. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. (This is front - place a marker.) 2nd row: 3 sc in 1st sc (2 sc increased), sc in each sc across, 2 sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Sc in each sc across, 3 sc in last sc. Ch 1, turn. Repeat the last 2 rows alternately 2 more times (18 sc on row). Work straight for 1 inch. Keep front edge straight but dec 1 sc at neck edge on each row until 1 sc remains. Ch 1, turn. Work sc evenly across decreased edge. Ch 1, turn. Sc in each sc across. Break off.

Sew pieces together. Stuff Head firmly and sew to Body.

LEG TRIM (Make 4) ... With Beige, ch 16. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: * With ring finger of right hand, draw thread on left hand out to form a loop ¾ inch long. Holding finger in loop, insert hook in next sc and make an sc. Repeat from * across. Break off. Sew to back of Leg.

MANE (Make 2) ... With Beige, ch 43. Work as for Leg Trim, drawing loops out to measure 1½ inches. Sew to back of Head.

EAR (Make 2 Beige and 2 Pink) ... Ch 7. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. Dec 1 sc at both ends of every 3rd row until 2 sc remain. Break off. Sew a Beige Ear on top of a Pink Ear and sew in place.

Embroider eyes with Black embroidery floss.

TAIL (Make 9 pieces) ... With Beige, make a chain 10 inches long. Break off. Braid 3 chains together for 2 inches. Make 2 more pieces same as this. Then braid these 3 braids together. Sew in place. Tie a bow at top of Tail.

BRIDLE. First Piece ... With Red, make a chain 8½ inches long. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Break off.

Second Piece ... Make a chain 4½ inches long and work as for First Piece. Sew onto Head.
