MATERIALS—D•M•C Pearl Cotton, Art. 116D, Size 8: 3 balls Navy No. 823 or Grey No. 414 (A), 1 ball White (B) and D•M•C Six Strand Cotton, Art. 117C: 1 skein Red No. 666 (C), 1 skein Blue No. 796 (D).
7½-inch Doll.
4-inch ribbon; ½ yard for Petticoat.
¼-inch ribbon; ¼ yard for Cap.
Scrap of fine net.
Steel Crochet Hook, Size 7.

GAUGE: 3 tr rows = 1 inch

* = STAR

SKIRT—With A ch 37, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 35 chs. Rnd 1—Ch 4, turn, tr in first sc, 2 tr in each of next 35 sc, join (with slip st) in top ch of ch-4. Rnd 2—Ch 5, turn, skip joined st, * work [1 tr, ch 1, 1 tr, ch 1] in each of next 2 tr, tr in next tr, ch 1; rpt from STAR around, join (in 4th ch of ch-5). Rnd 3—Turn, slip st in next sp, ch 5, [1 tr, ch 1] in each remaining sp, join (120 sps). Rpt rnd 3 twelve times. Fasten off.

BODICERow 1—Spacing sts evenly, with A work 42 sc on other side of foundation ch of Skirt. Row 2 (right side)—Ch 3, turn, skip first sc, dc in back loop of each remaining sc (leaving front loops free to use later for Peplum). Row 3—Ch 3, turn, dc in 2nd dc, dc in each of next 39 dc, dc in top of ch-3. Rpt row 3 three times. Shoulder Strap—Ch 1, turn, slip st in each of first 4 dc, ch 3, dc in each of next 4 dc. Row 2—Ch 3, turn, dc in 2nd dc, dc in each of next 2 dc, dc in ch-3. Rpt row 2 three times. Fasten off. Skip next 5 dc (for underarm), sew end of Strap to next 5 dc at front Bodice; work other Shoulder Strap to correspond. Sleeves—With A work [1 dc, ch 1] in each of 5 dc at underarm, [1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1] in each of 5 rows of Shoulder Strap, join in first dc (20 sps). Rnds 2 to 5—Slip st in next sp, ch 4, [1 dc, ch 1] in each remaining sp, join in 3rd ch of ch-4. Rnd 6—Slip st in next sp, ch 3, * skip next sp, dc in each of next 2 sps; rpt from STAR around, join (in top of ch-3). Rnds 7, 8, 9—Ch 3, skip joined st, dc in each remaining dc, join. Fasten off. Peplum—From right side, with A work [1 tr, ch 1] in each free loop of row 1 of Bodice, fasten off. Run a matching drawstring thru waistline. Steam lightly. Put dress on Doll, sew back seam, tighten drawstring, tie knot.

PETTICOAT—Sew ends of 4-inch ribbon together, run a shirring drawstring ¼-inch from one edge, put on Doll and tighten drawstring to fit waist, tie a knot.

CAP—With B ch 4, join into ring, ch 5, work [1 tr, ch 1] in ring 14 times, join. Rnds 2, 3—Ch 5, skip joined st, * tr in next sp, ch 1, tr in next tr, ch 1; rpt from STAR around, join. Rnd 4—Slip st in next sp, ch 4, tr in each remaining sp, join. Beading—Ch 5, skip joined st and next 2 tr, dc in next tr, ch 2, * skip next 2 tr, dc in next tr, ch 2; rpt from STAR around, join in 3rd ch of ch-5. Next rnd—Ch 7, slip st in 4th ch from hook, ch 1, tr in next sp, ch 1, * tr in next dc, ch 4, slip st in last tr made, ch 1, tr in next sp, ch 1; rpt from STAR around, join, fasten off. Run narrow ribbon thru Beading, tie a bow.

FLAG—Separate colors C and D (Six Strand Cotton) into two 3-strand lengths, using one 3-strand length of C, ch 37, dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in each of 33 chs, fasten off. Row 2—Turn, with B dc in each dc, dc in top of ch-3, fasten off. Row 3—Turn, with C dc in each dc across, fasten off. Row 4—Substituting B for C rpt row 3. Rpt rows 3 and 4. Row 7—Turn, with C work 1 dc in each of first 16 dc, change color in next dc as follows: yo, draw up a loop in next dc, yo, draw thru 2 loops (holding 2 loops on hook), drop C to back, with D yo and draw D thru 2 loops on hook, with D dc in each of next 18 dc, cut off C. Row 8—Ch 3, turn, dc in 2nd dc, dc in each of next 16 dc changing to B in last dc, with B dc in each of next 17 dc, cut off B. Row 9—Turn, with C work 17 dc changing to D in last dc, with D dc in each of 17 dc, dc in top of ch-3, cut off C. Rpt rows 8, 9, 8, 9. Fasten off. Embroider or sew 13 Stars and fasten to Flag in place as shown. Arrange net around neck as fichu and tack. Make brooch of beads and tack in place as shown.
