Mary Queen of Scots Doll Pattern

This lovely 16th century queen, devout and good, gave England her line of Stuart Kings.

MATERIALS—D•M•C Pearl Cotton, Art. 116D, Size 8: 2 balls Wine Ombre No. 75 or Wine No. 902 (A), 1 ball White (B).
7½-inch Doll.
4-inch ribbon; ½ yard for Petticoat.
Tiny Pearls.
Steel Crochet Hook, Size 7.

SKIRT—With A ch 38, sc in 2nd sc from hook, sc in each remaining ch (37 sc). Row 2 (right side)—Ch 1, turn, work 1 sc in back loop of each sc across (leaving front loops free to use later for Peplum). Rnd 1—Ch 3, turn, dc in first sc, 2 dc in each remaining sc, join (with slip st) in top ch of ch-3. Rnd 2—Ch 1, turn, sc in joined st, ch 5, [1 sc, ch 5] in each remaining dc, join (in first sc); 74 Loops. Rnds 3 to 10—Slip st to center of next Loop, turn, sc in same Loop, ch 5, [1 sc, ch 5] in each remaining Loop, join. Rnds 11 to 16—Rpt rnd 3 only ch 6 instead of ch-5. Rnds 17 to 23—Rpt rnd 3 only ch 7 instead of ch-5. Rnd 24—Slip st to center of next Loop, turn, sc in same Loop, * 3 dc in next sc, ch 4, slip st in 4th ch from hook, 3 more dc in same sc just used, sc in next Loop; rpt from STAR around ending with Shell, join, fasten off.

BODICE—Working on other side of foundation ch of Skirt, with A work 1 dc in each of 37 sts. Rows 2, 3, 4—Ch 3 ( = 1 dc), turn, dc in 2nd dc, dc in each st across (37) dc). Shoulder Strap—Ch 1, turn, slip st in each of first 3 dc, ch 3, dc in each of next 4 dc. Rows 2, 3, 4—Ch 3, turn, dc in 2nd dc, dc in each of next 2 dc, dc in ch-3. Fasten off. Skip next 5 dc (for underarm), sew end of Shoulder Strap to next 5 dc at front Bodice. Work other Shoulder Strap to correspond. Sleeve—With A work [1 dc, ch 1] in each of 5 dc at underarm, [1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1] in each of 4 rows of Shoulder Strap, join in first dc (21 sps). Rnds 2, 3, 4—Slip st in next sp, ch 4, [1 dc, ch 1] in each remaining sp, join in 3rd ch of ch-4. Rnd 5—Slip st in next sp, ch 3, dc in each remaining sp, join in top of ch-3. Rnds 6, 7, 8—Ch 3, skip joined st, dc in each remaining dc, join in first dc (a dec. made). Rnd 9—Ch 1, sc in each dc around, join in first sc, fasten off.

PEPLUM—Holding Skirt toward you, from right side, with A work 1 sc in first free loop of row 1 of Skirt, * skip next 2 free loops, work 10 tr in next free loop, skip next 2 loops, sc in next loop; rpt from STAR across, fasten off.

WRIST RUFFRow 1 (right side)—With B ch 20, dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in each remaining ch. To make Ruff: ch 3, working from right side, [1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1] around post of last dc made, * work 1 dc and ch 1 (around foundation ch) in sp between dc just used and next dc, [1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1] around post of next dc, 1 dc and ch 1 around top sp between last dc used and next dc, [1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1, 1 dc, ch 1] around post of next dc; rpt from STAR across, fasten off. Sew in. place as shown. Work other Sleeve to correspond. Run a matching drawstring thru waistline and neck edge. Steam lightly. Put dress on Doll, sew back seam. Tighten drawstrings, tie knot.

NECK RUFFRow 1 (right side)—With B ch 32, dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in each remaining ch. To make Ruff: ch 5, from right side, work [1 long tr, ch 1] 5 times around post of last dc made, * work 1 long tr and ch 1 (around foundation ch) in sp between dc just used and next dc, [1 long tr, ch 1] 5 times around post of next dc, 1 long tr and ch 1 around top sp between dc just used and next dc, [1 long tr, ch 1] 5 times around post of next dc; rpt from STAR across, fasten off; sew in place as shown.

PETTICOAT—Sew ends of 4-inch ribbon together, run a shirring drawstring ¼-inch from one edge, put on Doll and tighten drawstring to fit waist, tie knot.

HAT—With A ch 6, work 6 tr in 6th ch from hook. Row 2—Ch 4, turn, tr in first tr, 2 tr in each of next 5 tr, 2 tr in top ch of ch-5. Row 3—Ch 4, turn, tr in first tr, 2 tr in each of next 12 tr, 2 tr in top of ch-4. Row 4—Ch 1, turn, sc in each of first 2 sts, hdc in each of next 2 sts, dc in each of next 2 sts, tr in each of next 16 sts, dc in each of 2 sts, hdc in each of 2 sts, sc in each of next 2 sts. Rpt row 4 four times. Fasten off. White Edging—With B * ch 4, sc in 4th ch from hook; rpt from STAR until 6 inches of Edging or sufficient to go all around edge of hat. Fasten off; sew in place as shown. Decorate dress and hat with Pearls as shown.
