Check Your Swatch With Knitting Gauge: Knit or crochet a small swatch of the material. Measure the number of sts to the inch and compare with the gauge given in the directions you are following. If you are working tighter or looser than the gauge given, be sure to use a larger or smaller needle than the size indicated.
Buy From One Dye Lot: We urge you to obtain at one time all the yarn of one shade you will need for an article. Cynthia yarns are famous for their uniformity of shade. However, we cannot assume responsibility for slight differences that may occur in different dye lots, because conditions absolutely beyond control sometimes make it impossible to match shades perfectly.
Needle Gauge: Boye Needles have been used in knitting all of the articles in this book. The Millimeter and the corresponding standard sizes are listed below.

Casting On: Make a loop on the left-hand needle, * insert right-hand needle into loop, pass the yarn around the point of right-hand needle, draw yarn through loop, thus forming a new loop which will be on right-hand needle; slip this loop on to the left-hand needle, inserting needle from right to left, at the same time dropping it from right- hand needle. Repeat from * until the required number of sts are cast on, always inserting the right-hand needle into the last loop just slipped on left-hand needle.
To Knit (K): Cast on number of sts desired. Hold needle containing the sts in the left hand, insert other needle through the first loop, throw yarn over point of right-hand needle, pull through loop and let stitch slip off left-hand needle, retaining loop on right-hand needle. Work off all sts until no loops remain on left-hand needle.
To Purl (P): With yarn in front of needle, insert needle from right to left in front of st on left-hand needle. Throw yarn over point of right- hand needle, draw through loop, and let st drop off left-hand needle.
To Bind Off: K 2 sts, * pass the first st over the second st, K another st, repeat from *.
Joining Yarn: Always join at the beginning or end of a row. Join by weaving the two ends together or making a square knot.
Yarn Over (YO): Bring the yarn forward as if to P, then over the needle ready to K the next st.
Moss Stitch: K 1 st, P 1 st, on an uneven number of sts, beginning and ending each row with K 1 st.
Stockinette Stitch: K 1 row, P 1 row alternately. On circular needle K continuously.
Garter Stitch: K every row. A row is once across. A ridge is 2 rows.
To Work Even: Work without increasing or decreasing.
Chain Stitch (ch): Make a loop over hook, * thread over and through the loop, repeat from * until the desired length. Each loop is called a chain st.
Single Crochet (SC): Insert hook under 2 loops of st, draw thread through, thread over hook and draw through both loops on hook.
Double Crochet (DC): Thread over hook, insert hook in stitch, draw thread through, having 3 loops on hook, thread over and through 2 loops, thread over again and draw through the 2 remaining loops.
Half Double Crochet (HDC): Thread over hook, insert hook in stitch, draw thread through, having 3 loops on hook, then thread over and draw through all 3 loops.
Treble (Tr): Thread over hook twice, insert hook in stitch, draw thread through, having 4 loops on hook, thread over and through 2 loops, thread over again and through 2 loops, thread over and draw through the 2 remaining loops.
Slip Stitch (sl st): Insert hook in stitch, draw thread through both the stitch and the loop on hook. The slip st is always used for joining.
Picot (P): Make a ch of 3, 4 or 5 sts according to the number of sts given in directions you are following, then SC in the foundation or in the 1st st of ch.
* (Asterisk) indicates that the directions immediately following are to be repeated the number of times indicated in the directions — i.e. "repeat from * twice" means to work the pattern three times in all.
