Insertion Pattern

Materials Required—AMERICAN THREAD COMPANY "STAR" or "GEM" MERCERIZED CROCHET COTTON, Size 20
9—300 Yd. Balls will make 2 stripes 90 inches long and the edging around Cloth.
3 Skeins of "Star" Six Strand Mercerized Embroidery Cotton, White for initials on napkins.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 12 or 13.

2½ Yds. of 45 inch Linen will make a cloth 64½ x 92½.

INSERTION. Ch 101, d c in 8th st from hook. * ch 2, skip 2 sts, d c in next st, repeat from * to end of ch (32 meshes) ch 5, turn.
2nd Row. D c in next d c, * ch 5, s c in next d c, ch 5, d c in next d c, repeat from * 5 times, * ch 2, d c in next d c, repeat from * 5 times, * ch 5, s c in next d c, ch 5, d c in next d c, repeat from * 5 times, ch 2, d c in 3rd st of ch at end of row, ch 5, turn.
3rd Row. D c in d c, * ch 5, d c in next d c, repeat from * 5 times, ch 2, d c in next d c, * 2 d c in mesh, d c in d c, repeat from * 3 times, ch 2, d c in next d c, * ch 5, d c in next d c, repeat from * 5 times, ch 2, d c in 3rd st of ch 5 at end of row, ch 5, turn. Continue working up and down according to diagram until in­sertion measures about 90 inches or length desired. Com­plete a pattern and end with a row of open meshes. Work a second length of insertion and finish edges with a row of s c. Insert lace into linen sewing it on the right side first then turn a very narrow hem and sew on the wrong side.

EDGING. Work a row of s c over a rolled hem around the linen sections, then work a row of 2 ch meshes all around working 2 d c with ch 3 between in each corner.
2nd Row. Work 5 s c in each corner mesh and 2 s c in each mesh on sides of cloth then work a row of meshes.
4th Row. 3 s c in each of the next 2 meshes, * ch 4, sl st in top of last s c for picot, 3 s c in each of the next 2 meshes and repeat from * all around.

To Make Napkins to Match. Cut linen the size desired. Work a row of s c over a rolled hem and work border same as on cloth. Stamp initial in corner and embroider in satin stitch with "Star" Six Strand.
