Materials: Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Pearl Cotton, size 5, 6 balls of any color.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 6.

Starting at upper edge, ch 113 to measure about 18 inches. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch and in each ch across. Ch 6, turn. 2nd row: Insert hook in 2nd ch and * pull loop through, insert hook in next ch and repeat from * until there are 6 loops on hook; insert hook in st at base of ch-6 and pull loop through. *** Then draw this last loop through previous loop, ** thread over and draw through 2 loops. Repeat from ** until 1 loop remains, ch 6, thread over 4 times, skip 6 s c, insert hook in next st and draw loop through; work off 2 loops at a time until 1 loop remains (long tr). Ch 1 (there is now 1 loop on hook); pick up 5 more loops along bar of long tr just made; insert hook at base of bar and draw loop through. Repeat from *** across, ending with ch-1 after loops along bar are worked off. Turn. 3rd row: * S c directly above long tr-bar, 6 s c under ch-6. Repeat from * across, ending with s c above ch-6 bar. Ch 6, turn. 4th row: Work along turning ch-6 bar as for 2nd row, * ch 6, skip 5 s c, long tr in next s c; ch 1, pick up 5 more loops along bar, insert hook in next s c and pull loop through, then draw this loop through previous one. Work off loops on hook as before (this bar is exactly above bar of previous row). Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 3rd and 4th rows alternately until piece measures about 26 inches, ending with s c-row. Fasten off. Fold piece in half width wise and seam sides.

Handles … Cut 27 strands of thread, each 28 inches long. Divide into 3 groups of 9 strands each and make a braid. Sew braid to top of one side, as in illustration. Make another braid for handle at opposite side.
