Materials: Clark's O.N.T. or J. & P. Coats Pearl Cotton, size 5, 1 ball of Orange and 2 balls of Dark Blue.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 7.
A pair of beach sandal soles.

Gauge: (Mesh) 3 loops make 1¾ inches; 5 rows make 1½ inches.

Vamp … Starting at toes, with Orange ch 28. 1st row: * Pull out loop on hook ¾ inch, thread over and draw through loop, ch 1 (a loop st); skip 3 ch, s c in next ch. Repeat from * until 7 loops are made. Make a loop st, turn. 2nd row: * S c in next loop, make a loop st. Repeat from * across. Make a loop st, turn. Repeat 2nd row 3 more times, increasing 1 loop at both ends of 5th row (9 loops)—to inc., make s c in 1st s c, make a loop st, s c in next loop. Work straight until piece measures 3¾ inches. To shape top of vamp, dec. 1 loop at beginning of next 2 rows—to dec. at beginning of row, make a loop ½ the size of 1st loop, s c in loop, and continue across. Following row: Make a loop ½ the size of 1st loop, s c in loop and work to within last loop, d c in last loop, turn. Repeat this row until 1 loop remains. Fasten off.

Bands … With Dark Blue ch 6, s c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: S c in each st across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row until piece measures 8 inches. Fasten off. Place this band flat against top shaping of vamp, and sew in place. Make another band 3 inches long, and finish toe edge in same way.

Heel … Starting at bottom with Orange ch 40 very loosely and work a loop in every 5th ch (8 loops). Continue as for vamp without increasing for 2 inches. Fasten off. Work 2 rows of s c closely together along both side edges of heel. With Blue, make another band 27 inches long; sew heel piece flat against band, 9 inches in from 1 end (remainder of band to be used as ties, long end being inside end of heel). Place foot on sole. Pin vamp and heel in place as in illustration. Remove foot and sew crocheted pieces securely to stitching on sole. Make a ch-10 loop on wrong side of point on vamp, for long end of band to pass through. Make other sandal to correspond.
