Crocheting Bag Pattern #9095

Materials: Clark's O.N.T. "Brilliant", 8 balls of main color and 1 ball of a contrasting color for lettering.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 10.
A pair of circular embroidery hoops, 5 inches in diameter.

Bottom … Ch 4. 1st rnd: 11 d c in 4th ch from hook. Join with sl st to 4th st of ch-4. 2nd rnd: Ch 3 (to count as d c), d c in sl st, 2 d c in each d c around (24 d c). Join. Now make d c in each d c, increasing 12 d c in each rnd to keep work flat—to inc., make 2 d c in 1 st—until piece measures same as inner circumference of smaller hoop. Fasten off.

Side of Bag … Starting at bottom, ch 215 to measure about 17 inches. 1st row: 7 tr in 4th ch from hook, skip 3 ch, s c in next ch (a shell), * ch 3, 6 tr in same place as last s c (another shell), skip 3 ch, s c in next ch. Repeat from * across. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: * S c in ch-3 of next shell, ch 3 and complete a shell in ch-3 where last s c was made. Repeat from * across. Ch 3, turn. Repeat this row until piece measures about 6½ inches deep. Ch 3, turn. Next row: 4 d c where ch-3 started, * s c in ch-3 of next shell; make 5 d c in next s c between shells. Repeat from * across. Fasten off.

Cord … For a cord about 25 inches long, measure off twenty 2-yd. strands. Twist strands tightly, then double the twisted strands and give them a second twist in the opposite direction. With contrasting color make a similar cord, using 8 (instead of 20) 4½-yd. strands.

Work s c's closely around both hoops. Write out "Crochet" on paper so that lettering measures 8 inches across. Place paper across center 8 inches of side and baste over letters; tear away paper. Sew contrasting cord neatly over basting. Sew circular bottom to s c's of smaller hoop. Seam 6½-inch edges of side; sew lower edge to s c's on small hoop, and upper edge to large hoop. Sew cord handle in place.
