Materials: Clark's O.N.T. "Brilliant", 3 balls of Ecru, and 1 ball each of Red and Brown.
Milward's steel crochet hook No. 8.
Cotton batting.

Starting at center, with Ecru ch 2. 1st rnd: 8 s c in 2nd ch from hook. 2nd rnd: 2 s c in each s c around. 3rd rnd: * S c in next s c, 2 s c in next s c. Repeat from * around. 4th rnd: S c in each s c around. Repeat 4th rnd, increasing where necessary to keep work flat, until piece measures 3½ inches in diameter. Break off. Make another piece same as this.

Side Piece. Starting at short side, make a chain tightly to measure about 2¾ inches. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: S c in each s c across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row until piece measures same as circumference of first piece made. Break off.

Sew the 2 short sides of side piece together. Then place edge of this piece against edge of first piece made, and sew in place. Stuff firmly with cotton batting. Then sew on second round piece to correspond. Make a ¼-inch tuck along top and bottom edges (thus forming drum head).

Bands (Make 2). With Brown, make a chain tightly to measure about ½ inch, and work as for side piece until piece is long enough to go all around drum. Sew these pieces along top and bottom edges.

Cord. Cut 3 strands of Red, each 12 yds. long. Double these strands, and make a loop at center. Draw loop out 1½ inches. Then, holding 3 strands in each hand, and loop on index finger of right hand, * insert index finger of left hand in front of loop and draw the 3 strands of left hand through; remove index finger of right hand. Then, holding strands of left hand and loop on index finger firmly, pull strands of right hand tightly. Now insert index finger of right hand in front of loop and draw strands of right hand through; remove index finger of left hand and, holding strands of right hand and loop on index finger firmly, pull strands in left hand tightly. Repeat from * for length of material. Draw end through last loop of cord. Fasten and break off. With Brown, sew cord to drum as in illustration. Knot and fringe ends of cord after tying in a bow.
