Envelope with Fringe Bag Pattern #2687

MATERIALS:
J. & P. COATS CROCHET CORD, 3 balls of White or Ecru for main color and 1 ball each of 3 contrasting colors to be referred to as Dark, Medium and Light.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 1.
½ yard buckram.
½ yard lining material.
1 snap fastener.

GAUGE: 3 shells measure 3 inches; 5 rows of shells measure 2 inches.

BACK PIECE … Starting at bottom with main color, make a chain to measure about 20 inches. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, * skip 4 ch, 7 tr in next ch (shell made), skip 4 ch, sc in next ch. Repeat from * across, until row measures 13 inches ending with an sc. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 4, turn. 2nd row: 3 tr in 1st sc (half shell made), * sc in center tr of next shell, shell in next sc. Repeat from * across ending with 4 tr in last sc (half shell made). Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Sc in 1st tr, * shell in next sc, sc in center tr of next shell. Repeat from * across ending with sc in top st of turning ch. Fasten off. Attach dark color, ch 4, turn. 4th row: Same as 2nd row. Fasten off. Attach medium color, ch 1, turn. 5th row: Same as 3rd row. Fasten off. Attach light color, ch 4, turn. 6th row: Same as 2nd row. Fasten off. Attach main color, ch 1, turn. Then work as for 3rd and 2nd rows alternately (do not fasten off at end of 3rd row) until piece measures 7½ inches in all end­ing with the 3rd row. Work a row of shells with light color, a row with medium color, and a row with dark color changing colors as before. Work 3 more rows with main color. Fasten off.

FRONT PIECE … Work as for Back Piece until piece measures 7 inches in all. Fasten off.
   Make a paper pattern of each crocheted piece and lay aside to be used later.
   Sew bottom and side seams with over-and-over stitches. Bag is fastened with a snap fastener.

FRINGE … Cut two 4-inch strands of main color. Double these strands forming a loop. In­sert hook in a stitch at edge of bag and pull loop through, now draw loose ends through loop and pull tightly. Make fringe closely all around bag as in illustration.
   Trim fringe to measure 1½ inches. For lining instructions see patternbook page.
