MATERIALS:
J. & P. COATS or CLARK'S O.N.T. PEARL COTTON, Size 5, 3 balls of White, Ecru or any color.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 2/0.
⅔ yard matching velvet ribbon, ⅝ inch wide.

GAUGE: 6 sts make 1 inch; 2 dc and 2 sc-rows make 1 inch.

Use thread double throughout.

Starting at center back, ch 7. 1st row: 3 dc in 4th ch from hook, 2 dc in each of next 2 ch, 4 dc in next ch. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: 2 sc in 1st dc, sc in each dc across, 2 sc in top st of turning ch. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: 2 dc in 2nd sc, thread over twice, insert hook under turning ch below, pull loop through and complete as for a tr (a raised st is made), dc in next sc, thread over twice, insert hook between turning ch and next dc from right of work and out between 1st and 2nd dc from back of work, draw loop through and com­plete a raised st as before; * dc in next sc, in next dc on 1st row make a raised st as before. Repeat from * across, thus making a raised st in each st of 1st row, ending with 3 dc in last sc. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: Sc in each st across. Ch 3, turn. 5th row: 2 dc in 1st sc, make a raised st over next st below, * skip the sc directly behind this raised st, 2 dc in next sc, make a raised st over raised st below. Repeat from * across, ending with raised st over last raised st, skip the sc behind the raised st, 2 dc in next sc, skip the dc below, make a raised st over next dc, 3 dc in last sc. Ch 1, turn. 6th row: Same as 4th row, making ch 11 to turn. Do not break off, but attach a new piece of double thread at opposite end of row and ch 9. Fasten off. 7th row: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across, make a raised st over turning ch below, * skip the sc behind this raised st, dc in next 2 sc, make a raised st over raised st below. Repeat from * across, making a raised st over last dc, and dc over each ch at end of row. Ch 1, turn. 8th row: Same as 4th row.

   9th row: Dc in 1st sc, dc in next sc, make a raised st over next dc below, skip the sc behind this raised st, 2 dc in next sc, * make a raised st over next dc below. Repeat from * 3 more times; now work in pattern across, making raised sts over raised sts and 1 dc in each of the 2 sc be­tween raised sts (always skip the sc behind raised sts). Work other end to correspond. Ch 1, turn. 10th row: Same as 4th row. 11th row: Make a raised st over turning ch, * skip the sc behind this raised st, dc in next 2 sc, make a raised st over next raised st. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. 12th row: Same as 4th row. 13th row: * Make a raised st over raised st below, skip the sc behind the raised st, dc in next 2 sc. Repeat from * across, ending with a raised st over last dc. Ch 1, turn. 14th row: Skip 1 sc, work off next 2 sts as 1 sc, sc in each st across to within last 3 sts, work off these last 3 sts as 1 sc. Ch 3, turn. 15th row: Dc in 2nd sc, make a raised st over raised st below, and work in pattern across, ending with a raised st and 2 dc. Ch 1, turn. 16th row: (Work off 2 sts as 1 sc) 3 times; sc in each st across, (working off 2 sts as 1 sc) 3 times at end of row. Do not turn but work sc along inner edge of hat, to even it up.
   Join and fasten off.
   Cut ribbon in half. Sew one piece to each end at back and tie into a bow.
