MATERIALS:
J. & P. COATS KNIT-CRO-SHEEN, 2 balls of White, Ecru, Cream or any color.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 2/0.
1 yard of 2½-inch wide grosgrain ribbon.

GAUGE: 4 rnds make 1½ inches.

Use thread double throughout. Hat is worked on wrong side.

Starting at center, ch 12 to measure 2 inches. 1st rnd: 3 dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in next 7 ch, 6 dc in next ch, working along opposite side of foundation chain make dc in next 7 sts, 3 dc in last st. Join with sl st in top st of starting chain. 2nd rnd: Ch 3, working in the front loop of each st, make 2 dc in each of next 3 dc (3 sts increased), dc in next 7 dc, 2 dc in each of next 6 dc (6 more sts increased), dc in next 7 dc, 2 dc in each of remaining 3 dc. Join with sl st in top st of start­ing chain. 3rd rnd: Ch 3, thread over, insert hook between starting chain and 1st dc and bring it out between 2nd and 3rd dc, draw loop through and complete as for a dc, dc in same place as hook was brought out (between 2nd and 3rd dc), * thread over, insert hook under following 2 dc, draw loop through and complete as for a dc, dc between last 2-dc group just worked and following dc. Repeat from * around. Join. 4th rnd: Ch 3, working in front loop of each st, make dc in each dc, increasing 10 dc at each end of oval (keeping sides straight). Repeat 3rd and 4th rnds alternately 3 more times, then the 3rd rnd once more. Next rnd: Same as 4th rnd omitting increases. Following rnd: Same as 3rd rnd. Fasten off.

FLARE … Place a pin 4 inches on both sides of starting chain (center back). With right side fac­ing, attach thread at one pin, ch 3 and work as follows: 1st row: Dc in back loop of each st across to other pin, increasing 14 dc evenly across. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Thread over, insert hook between 1st and 2nd dc and bring it out between 3rd and 4th dc, draw loop through and complete as for a dc, dc in same place as hook was brought out. Continue in pattern across. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: Dc in back loop of each dc across, increasing 14 dc evenly across. Ch 3, turn. Re­peat 2nd and 3rd rows alternately for 6 inches ending with the 2nd row. Fasten off.
   With right side facing work a row of sl sts along the ridge where flare was joined to hat, holding work in to measure 7 inches. Fasten off.
   Make a ribbon bow and sew to back of hat as in illustration.
