Bag measures 14 inches.

MATERIALS:
J. & P. COATS KNIT-CRO-SHEEN, 2 balls of White, Ecru, or Cream, or 3 balls of any color.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 1/0.
½ yard buckram.
½ yard lining material.
1 snap fastener.

GAUGE: 5 sts make 1 inch; 4 rows make 1 inch.

Make a chain to measure about 16 inches (8 ch sts make 1 inch). 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across until row measures 14 inches. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Insert hook in 2nd ch from hook and draw loop through, insert hook in next ch and draw loop through to same height as other loops on hook, insert hook in base of turning ch and draw loop through, insert hook in next sc and draw loop through, thread over and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1 to fasten (star st made). * Insert hook in fastening ch just made and draw loop through, insert hook in last loop of previous star st and draw loop through, insert hook in same sc where last loop of previous star st was drawn through and draw loop through, skip next sc, insert hook in next sc and draw loop through, thread over and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1 to fasten (another star st made). Make an­other star st same as this, drawing up the last loop in the next free sc (instead of skipping an sc). Repeat from * across. Ch 3, turn. 3rd row: Insert hook in 2nd ch from hook and draw loop through, insert hook in next ch and draw loop through, insert hook in fastening ch of star st be­low and draw loop through, insert hook in fasten­ing ch of next star st and draw loop through, thread over and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1 to fasten. * Insert hook in fastening ch just made and draw loop through, insert hook in last loop of previous star st and draw loop through, insert hook in same fastening ch where last loop of previous star st was drawn through and draw loop through, insert hook in fastening ch of next star st and draw loop through, thread over and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1 to fasten. Repeat from * across, drawing up last loop of last star st in top st of turning ch. Ch 3, turn. Repeat 3rd row for 19 inches. Ch 1, turn.
   Next row: * Sc in fastening ch of next star st, sc in top of next star st, sc in fastening ch of same star st. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. Following row: Sc in next 7 sc, ch 10, drop loop from hook, insert hook in 1st sc made and draw dropped loop through, * make 15 sc in loop, sc in next 4 sc, ch 10, drop loop from hook, counting backwards from last loop skip 2 sc, insert hook in next sc and draw dropped loop through (being careful that the last ch-10 loop appears behind previous loop). Repeat from * across ending with 15 sc in last loop, sc in last sc. Fasten off.

GUSSET (Make 2) … Make a chain to measure about 4 inches (8 ch sts make 1 inch). 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across until 23 sc are made. Ch 3, turn. 2nd row: Same as 2nd row of bag (15 star sts on row). Con­tinue working in star st for 2½ inches. Next row: Insert hook in 2nd ch from hook and draw loop through, insert hook in next ch and draw loop through, (insert hook in fastening ch of next star st and draw loop through) twice; thread over and draw through all loops on hook, ch 1 to fasten (1 star st decreased). Work in pattern across to within last 2 star sts, insert hook in fastening ch just made and draw loop through, insert hook in last loop of previous star st and draw loop through, insert hook in fastening ch of next star st and draw loop through, insert hook in top st of turning ch and draw loop through, thread over and draw through all loops on hook (another star st decreased). Continue to dec 1 star st at both ends of every 3rd row thereafter until piece meas­ures 6½ inches. Fasten off.
   Make a paper pattern of each crocheted piece and lay aside to be used later.
   Sew gussets in place on wrong side with over-and-over stitches, leaving a flap about 3½ inches deep. Bag is fastened with a snap fastener. For lining instructions see patternbook page.
