Bag measures about 16 inches.
MATERIALS:
J. & P. COATS or CLARK'S O.N.T. PEARL COTTON, Size 5, 18 balls of White, Ecru or any color.
Steel Crochet Hook No. 1.
½ yard lining material.
½ yard crinoline.
An 8-inch zipper.
GAUGE: 7 sts make 1 inch; 5 rows make 1 inch.
SIDE (Make 2) … Starting at bottom, make a chain about 15 inches long (7 ch sts to an inch).
1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each following ch across, until row measures 12½ inches. (There should be an even number of sc's.) Cut off remaining chain. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: In first st make sc, dc and sc (2 sts increased), * dc in next st, sc in next st. Repeat from * across, ending with dc, sc and dc in last st (2 more sts increased). Ch 1, turn. Repeat the 2nd row twice. Now work in pattern as before (making sc over dc and dc over sc), increasing 2 sts at both ends of every 3rd row 4 times. Work straight until piece measures 3½ inches deep. Ch 1, turn. Next row: Work off 3 sts as 1 (2 sts decreased) and work in pattern across, working off last 3 sts as 1 (2 more sts decreased). Ch 1, turn. Following row: Work in pattern across (do not decrease). Ch 1, turn. Repeat these last 2 rows alternately until piece measures 5½ inches deep. Now work straight in pattern for 1½ inches (piece should now measure 7 inches).
GUSSET … (Use thread double). 1st row: Ch 10, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row for 30 inches. Fasten off.
ROLL (Make 2) … (Use thread double). Make a chain about 35 inches long (11 ch sts to 2 inches). 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each following ch across, until row measures 30 inches long. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 1, turn. 2nd row: Sc in 1st sc, * tr in next sc, sc in next sc. Repeat from * across, ending with sc in last st. Ch 1, turn. 3rd row: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. 4th row: Sc in 1st sc, * dc in loop formed by tr below, skip the sc directly behind the dc just made, sc in next sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. 5th row: Sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn. 6th row: Sc in 1st sc, * dc in loop formed by the dc below, skip the sc directly behind the dc just made, sc in next sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn. Repeat 5th and 6th rows alternately 2 more times. Fasten off.
Make paper patterns of sides and gusset and lay aside to be used later.
Sew gusset in place. Sew one long edge of Roll to one side of a gusset seam. Sew other long edge to other side of same seam, thus forming a tubular roll. Sew other Roll over remaining gusset seam.
Make 5 pleats on both sides along top of bag, having top measure 8½ inches across. Use double strand, make 4 rows of sc along top of each side. Tack ends of rolls to adjacent sc-band at top. Tack adjacent rolls, thus narrowing gusset at top.
HANDLE … With double strand, make a chain 9 inches long. 1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn. 2nd, 3rd and 4th rows: Sc in each sc across. Ch 1, turn.
Sew together long edges of this sc-strip. Sew ends together, forming a loop and sew loop to zipper. For lining instructions see patternbook page. Sc-bands at top of bag should extend beyond zipper.
